Hi Everyone,

this probably isn't the right place for this but for once I don't care about the rules...

we've just heard about the aircraft attacks in New York and Washington. My thoughts at the moment are with those of you in these (and all of the other major US cities).

I hope you're ok, that your family and friends are ok. Best wishes.

I honestly can't think of the appropriate words to say...

terrible, stunning news.

I share your sentiments and I also express my best wishes and prayers to those who have been affected by the atrocious events taking place in the US.
Its saddening when people can have such a total lack of respect for human life. Those that have died have family, friends etc and Its heart wrenching to imagine the pain hurt and turmoil they may be experiencing.
My prayers go out to all.

See my reply to the other thread, because I am sincerely touched by our worldwide friends but especially from our long time friends in the UK.

Thanks so much,

I must admit, after I was over the shock of the two buildings collapsing, I began to think about what their I/S department is going to do as far as data recovery, etc... I am betting that one of the reasons that there were two buildings is so that they could have redundant systems. Well, that ain't gonna help here. I also wonder about what kind of DRP they have in place...

Hi Strikeattack,

the same thought came to me late yesterday as I was explaining to someone in the office about the concept of 'hot standby' servers, how two are linked and in different locations and one take over if the other goes down...

then I realised the most obvious location for the second server would be the other building...

It could be that some of the banks and other major corporations have big problems in the coming months.

Plus, they have to try to replace trained staff who knew what was current in their business. I fear it's going to be some time before it's all back to normal.

I believe all trained Network personnel would fully implement an offsite recovery taking in consideration city if not statewide disaster.

As a mid experience network person I was taught that in the preliminary stage of my training. At my first job I urge my VP and manager to implement this practice dispite the cost involved.

Hi Jane55,

Surely planning for recovery wouldn't normally include the building not being there afterwards...it's just too big a step to take, our minds automatically discard that option as being so unlikely.

Of course, I have to admit here that I've never worked for a major corporation so I don't have much experience to go on.

When planning for redundancy, there are typically 4 areas of main concern. Device failure, Server failure, Room failure, and Site failure...

If you take into consideration that a terrorist already tried to bring down the buildings (1993?), I would say that it is likely that their DRP included site failure. This may be through the use of SANs or whatever. I would say its likely that they did a backup the night before.

If I may....this is not the right time to speak of such things regarding the disaster area. The finacial area of NYC is fine in that regard and all should know that the USA's financial markets have not been damaged and are alive and well. There has only been a momentary pause and you can expect a strong market to be shown on Monday.
