The CCNA is the foundation and overview of networking such OSI model, physcial media requirements, Cisco's technology, routing commands, and IP, especially subnetting. Kind of like going to Kindergarten where you learn the basic skills of what you will need to know for future schooling. I can see why it is a requirement for all of the other Cisco certifications. The material in the CCNP, CCDA, CCDP, and security all integrate themselves with these basic fundamentals.

While you may be able to pass the CCNA test without in-depth study and review due to all the exam aids available, do yourself a favor and build a solid understanding of these concepts. Get as much hands on in a lab as possible so that the formatting and structure of Cisco's routing commands become very familiar to you. This is what creates competency, trouble shooting skill, and will promote you through the ranks much quicker.
