Author IOS recovery via Console port

Hi all,

I cannot recover a router IOS under ROMMON mode... I use console cable to connect PC to router. At console mode I type:

xmodem "ios_filename"

I then run Hyperterminal and choose "Transfer -> Send file". I can select the file but cannot start the sending process("Send" button is always greyed.)

Did I miss some steps or do something wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It seems that your Hyperterminal software is not fully installed. Some components might be missing.

supergoku0,
Depending on what router you are working on, you cannot transfer a file thru a console cable alone. You must have another link to the router, usually thru e0.
The console cable is for issuing commands to the router, and the e0 connection actually transfers the file.
Also, to load or recover an IOS, you need a tftp server running; plus you don't transfer the file with Hyperterminal, that is just used for your telnet session. The router uses commands to transfer the file itself.
Let me know if you need links to cisco to accomplish this.

Here's one link to cisco that shows how to upload a system image using the console.

Thanks for your inputs gentlemen,

What I did were exactly the steps mentioned in the link, execpt I am not sure if it's correct to connect my PC to router(it's a 1750) with only a console cable(now the "send" button on Hyperterminal works but the downloading still fails)

Hi CCIE2B,

I wonder if it's OK to connect the ethernt port to PC under ROMMON mode as I can't set an IP to the router interface in this mode, do you mean the router interface can automatically detect and finish the "downloading"?

Anyway I will try that when i'm back to work next week.

Many thanks,
Goku
