Reamer, depamo - and the rest you have contributed to this great forum

Thank you and all the help with the Home lab issue - I wish all the best of luck in all your endeavors!

Secondly - I have done a survey
Most companies still use old technology in their networks - this will change which will usher all of us into the "second wave"
This survey also shows there seems to be some arragence in the cisco vets - maybe maybe rightfuly so.

We have spent much time studying and dedicating a portion of our lives to Cisco
Some one once told me " you will eat drink and sleep Cisco"

Well I can say unequivocally, there is some validity to this statement

I made one mistake in the recommendations that I made for the home lab. The 2500 series routers cannot act as a router-on-a-stick for the switch configurations since they do not have fast ethernet capability. They can use bridge-groups but if the purpose is to pratice the exercises in the book, then you will need to get something that uses the similar commands.

Your choices on the low end are a 2520 with one fast-ethernet adapter or a 2521 with two of them. On ebay they run about the same prices considering the value of the second built-in fast-ethernet adapter (if you later want to go for security, this has some great possibilities for firewall setup) it might be worth it now. The adapters are built-in and you don't need a module for it. Been tracking a few of these lately, low end they can go for about $1,000 but used in the box are in the $1,500 range for the 2521. The 2520 usually start low, around $800.00 but spike to about $1,200 by the end making the price the same as the 2521.

You might get lucky and get your hands on a 3600 but you will have to get the modules that cost around $500 a piece that jacks the price up also.

Even though the 2610 has an open expansion slot, you cannot use it for Fast-Ethernet, the modules don't exist for that series of router.

Sometimes life just sucks on this stuff. Hope that wasn't misleading and hope it also keeps you on the right track.

e-bay is funny (2 minute warning) he's back to pass - TD! - I lost.

My first encounter with the bidding war was a learning experience 50 pounds of 10 million year old petrified shark teeth - some large 5 inches long - some smaller I had it at the 5 min mark - @ 200 - but someone blasted me at the last minute with 400 - I lost

I tried for a 2509 and lost - there are more 2509 out there - There seems to be good package deals - you know 2 * 2501, books, TFTP disk ,a 24 port hub, ios 12.0(?) 12 flash 12 dram, a free turkey dinner if you buy now - or was a free trip to Turkey. I am in reset mode for now.
Goal - ?
1- One router on a stick - 2521 - ? (mls) ? I priced card NFFC / RSM - MLS - they are high
1- 2501, 12.0 and up
2- Swiches (IOS) 2900xl

The "buy it now" package deals seems to be the way to go (two 2501 and the turkey) - but I have never bought anything on e-bay to I am apprehensive. RESET -

The reason they blow you away is that they got the shareware program off download.com that allows them to incrementally bid on a product during the last few minutes. Neat little tool, sniper or something like that. Anyhow it synchronizes to the Ebay clock and you put in your limits and it will quick bid for you. Just goto download.com and search on ebay bidding and some of these tools will come up. Don't know of any freeware ones but they might exist. Would probably try it out on something that you need that is cheap!!

Hope that helps, talk to you later!!

Just an FYI gang ... 2520 and 2521 in the above message are typos. If you're looking for ISL trunking capability, you need a 2620 or better. I think they usually go on EBay around $1200 or so. You'd also want to get a WIC-1T for it (so it has a serial port); those can be had under $200. Make sure the IOS on the router is trunking capable before you buy. (I believe any "plus" IOS will trunk; don't quote me on it).

If you're planning to add VOIP in the future, try to find a voice-enabled IOS. Be aware that the an NM-1V + VIC2-FXS for the router would come to another $1100 or so on EBay ... and you'd still need something to do the other end of the VOIP.

The good Dr is right on with the prices, but if you have time you can get deals. Many of the WIC1Ts go for $220 and you can get 2610s for under $1000 if you are patient (I got one for $900).

Depamo is wrong about the FE modules in the 2600 series. They are available because I have one running in my lab.

Be careful about flash and RAM amounts as well as the feature sets in the IOS these guys offer because many of them either don't know what they are doing or intentionally sell an IOS that will barely run in the IOS they offer.

Great catch, guess that I shouldn't comment when I am dead tired at 1AM, the routers are 2620 and 2621, not 2520/2521. Here is a little cheat sheet for IOS information from the Cisco site--

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/13...feature-support

I actually have a 2610 right now, wanted to use it for routing on a stick but couldn't find a module that would run FE for it on the Cisco site. All the modules that they list for the 2610 are 10Mb/s, all the FE's are for either 3600 or 2620's. I don't have anything less then a 3600 at work so tried to use the Cisco Site for a grueling couple of hours with no luck. Do you have the Module Number on that Bad Boy??

1FE-TX

I have two 2610s and a 3640 amongst other things and haven't had any module not work in either, though I'm sure if ya search hard enough you may find one that isn't interchangable!

Cool, will grab a spare from work and see if it boots up or not. Thanks for the information, probably save me quite a bit of effort trying to get that one figured out.
