X.21 Interface Back to Back connection
|
|
|
| Hi all professionals,
Could someone advise if I can connect 2 x.21 cables (DTE type) back to back with the right config on each router (ie. R1-S0 DTE and R2-S0 DCE) to make the serial link work ?
Other than purchasing another DCE type cable to make it work, is there any workaround.
Thanks to the Pro,

| If your two cables are both X21-MT(DTE) then it will not work as the 25pin connectors will both be male & one should be female. You could do it with a custom made connector in between which would cross the relevent wires to effectively make one of the cables DCE.
Ideally you need one X21-MT(DTE) & one X21-FC cable. Alternatively you can buy a ready made DB60 to DB60 xover cable which is probably a better option. One end is marked as DTE & the other DCE.
Hope this helps

| Hi Guys
I had a look at doing this a few months ago. There are different wires connected to different pins in the 60 pin plugs of the two types of cable...
so I split a DTE 60 pin plug open and it's a bugger to solder the right wires in place (somewhere in the middle of the plug). I soldered a wire on, knocked another one off, resoldered that one...
and yet another one fell off!
I'd say it's not impossible to do, I was close to succeeding, but you need a steady hand and lots of paitence.
It may have helped me if I'd got the plug held in a vice or something but I was pratting about at my desk...

| I've got the bit between my teeth with this now. I found the pinouts on Cisco's web site & can see the pins that you refer to. I have got two DTE cables & I am going to attempt to make my own x-over this weekend.
I'll let you know how I get on.

| Hi Dillon,
you'd be better off clamping the plug in a vice and tying back the cable so it can't swing around, that was the mistake that I made. The wires are so delicate that they pop off as soon as you look them!
Also, go for the smallest soldering bit that you have, and if you get any sort of connexion, no matter what it looks like, then leave it at that...
I had a connexion, the solder looked rough so I went for a re-fix to tidy it up a bit and that's when disater struck!
Once you fiddle the 60 pin, I'd leave the 21 pin alone and make a changeover connector...
odds: 6/4 success, 4/5 fail, 50/1 the draw...
Good Luck

| www.symmic.com has 3' 60-pin crossover cables for $30. There are other sources for them as well. Why torture yourself?
FWIW,

| Hi doctorcisco,
because we're in the UK and the same cable here costs between 50 and 70 pounds (Sterling)...
that's around US$70 - 98. I know that we could order these things off the net, but that takes time and adds quite a bit in postage...plus import duty of course.
Quite honestly, you guys in the US don't seem to realise how fortunate you are to have so much cheap stuff within your own country.

Yikes ... that IS quite a bit pricier. Cisco brand cables run about that here. The off-brand cables I bought work fine. They're actually made over in the Far East somewhere, I'm sure. Now if you could just find a vendor there in the UK ...
Sorry if he sounded a bit testy,

Hey doc, you made my day with that site. I've always been wondering how Ladies' Fashion, Computer Accessories and Heavy Duty Equipments go together. Anyway, I've got some ideas for presents... | |

I got a kick out of that myself when I was there a few months back.

| Hi doctorcisco,
no problem, thanks for the input. Yes I'm sure we could find cheaper stuff, and I'd use it if I could but my boss says we have to buy original gear...
he's got this thing about 'quality'. That's management for you...

Then I humbly suggest you sic the beancounters (AKA accountants) on him. On the other hand, if you want to keep your job, you may wish to consider other alternatives.
Always Ready With Helpful Suggestions,
