You may want to hear from somebody who actually read the two books (which is not my case). What I can tell you is that the Sybex CCNA book was a big disappointment for me: full of mistakes. I've even seen a mistake in the errata [grin]...

If you ask me, Cisco Press should be enough.

What I like to do is read the sybex book first because its easier to digest and then read the Cisco book to really reinforce everything.
Remember Cisco books are always the way to go.

I can't comment on the sybex books for CCNP. I have not used them. I used the cisco press cert prep library with exam crams. I also use the CCIE books for more detail and comprehension.

If you get Cisco Press plus 1 more, I'd go with the Cisco Press Preparation Library and Vol. 1 of the Jeff Doyle book. If you can get another get the Andrew Caslow book ca;;ed Cisco Certification Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE's. I'd stay away from the Sybex. Not too helpful and many errors.

I always get two or three books for each exam. I have used either the Syngress or Osborne books. I know there have been errors, but I always get the errata for any book that I use. Personally I like the flow of these books better than the ciscopress books. However, I do use the Ciscopress as my reference guide. So far, I read the other books first while using Ciscopress for reference. Then I read the examcrams and do my practice tests or sims before taking the test.

My suggestion is to get to a book store and read different chapters and make the call for yourself. The other option is to goto the publisher's web sites to see if they have sample chapters posted. Also check for the errata of any book that you are interested in.

I usually read and understand the Cisco Press book first and do what I need to do with lab work then use another book to get the other point of view. Lastly I will read some Sybex notes on the exam and then take some of the Boson exams to get myself into the mode of the Cisco exam (multiple answers, entering in commands and such). Seems to work pretty good. I at least understand everything by the time I take the test well enough to work my way through almost any questions.
