Ciscoers

I just bought a new 1720 series Cisco Router for only $700. Is it cheap?
I wonder why people are using 2500 series router for their labs. Because 2500 series router is not a modular type and the model has been discontinued.

Thanks a lot for any information.

People use 2500 series for a few reasons. First, you can probably pick one up for a bit less than that. Secondly, if you want that 1720 to be useful in your lab you will need a serial WIC. That adds to the cost of the 1720, but a 2500 series will probably have built-in serial ports (there are a few exceptions).

Secondly, the 2500 series supports the Enterprise IOS Feature Pack. The 1720 will support most of the common protocols, but not the full Enterprise feature set.

Finally, the 2500 series is rack mountable, the 1720 is not. This makes a difference once your lab starts to grow.
