| First the issue of pay generally shall not be the first question to ask. I do not do that on the employing side. If it is so, I do not have a good opionion, as I feel the company is more interested in getting lower paid staff. It should be ensuring that you fit their bill first and foremost.
I tend to throw the question back to the company as to how much am I worth based on their remuneration policy. If I find acceptable to the scope of work and responsiblity plus a range of issues in totality take it, else counter offer. Of course I do most research by asking friends, customer and vendor in similiar role about the range of salary. If cornered to give a figure, I shall give my base non negotiable.
In US, I shall request for at least USD80K (as I need H1B sponsor) but ideally is seeking more than USD90K. I have friend in US working in Applied Material Santa Clara, California, near Cisco, Mcafee etc earning close to USD70K but he has lesser experience and certification than myself. My brother-in-law, an American was in Cinninati, Ohio raking in six digit p/a. Wew, at time I feel like packing my bag and go to US, if not for the kids. A joke, a Singaporean talking about US.
Shall be CCNP this 30th Jun, my last paper 640-503. | |

| Don't be disappointed when you find you can't make near that much money. Too many people think that a CCNA or even a CCNP/DP is automatically worth 80-90K and it just ain't the norm. I'm sure there are some out there that do, but despite all the salary ranges you read about you may be disappointed.
Sorry for the bad news,

| Oh, the last statement "shall be CCNP" is not the basis of my expected range. It is the experiences of over 12 years, from in-house network management, application development, training and vendor consulting, implementation and post support. Roll out several multi-million project both in vendor as well as in-house. In addition to all those certification, I do have a MSc degree in Computing and Post Grad Diploma in Accounting as well as a Professional qualification in Business Administration.
Was 3.12 CNE back in 93 (a very early pioneer). Anyway the expectation was derived back in Jun 1999 where the 2001 H1B quota is to be raised to 230K (if I remembered correctly). It my constant non-stop quest for upgrading till now that is the not easy to find. It is not just for career but a true passion of IT. If I do have an intent to move over, then I shall do another survey prior to asking, keeping up-to-date is required. Of course now times are bad, your bargaining power is reduced but there is still a base, only find out the base.

| The "base" is reducing..... We are getting many calls from those that jumped to the "dot coms" for the big money a year or so ago and now they are out of work. Want work? Ya better be able to compete with the experienced or reduce your salary expectations. I been saying this for a while and now I am seeing the proof.
