Just bought a used router and i have been trying to configure the serial interfaces but they continue to stay down every time i issue the no shutdown command. I`m using a cisco 2504 i`ve configured ip address on the interfaces and i just using a single router,i figured the line protocol would stay down because the interfaces are not connected to anything, but i don`t know why the interface will not come up.....There is also an token-ring interface which does the same thing even confdigured the ring speed, and none of my interfaces will come up.

you have no physical or protocol connection, thus down/down.

For serial interface, physical will come up if Carrier Detect (CD) is up. For ethernet interface, physical will come up after you supply 'no shut' command.

Hello,

When you plug your cable into your Serial port is it a DCE or DTE cable. I was going to suggest setting the clock rate if it was a DCE.

Hope this helps.
