Just curious how many people actually made it through CCNP without actually touching a router or a switch.

Trying to decide whether I should invest the money now for a home lab or wait until I get to CCIE. A lot of money we are talking about......

I'm sure that it can be done without any hands-on experience at all, however if you plan to go all the way to CCIE level then you may as well invest in some equipment now as it will make your studying a whole lot easier.

It's certainly possible. With the way that many books are written, that is geared specifically towards passing the exam, ANYONE could study it, and then pass the exams. For that matter, my wife (who's an artist, NOT an IT person) could study and pass the CCNP with enough effort.
However, I would hope that's not really your goal. Do you want to prove you can pass the exam, or do you want to prove a certain level of proficiency in networking? If you have been thinking about setting up a home lab for yourself, then obviously you have already thought about how you're going to finance it. Therefore, I would go ahead and pull the trigger. Learn the material as it will relate to which goals you are trying to meet.

IMO,

If you are not getting the router and switch experience at work, I would definitely make the investment now. If I were you, I would get ATLEAST two 2600 series router and a 2924XLEN or 3524XLEN switch. This will give you a GOOD BASIC setup to start learning with.

Your next stop will be ebay.com!
