Well, I've got all Sybex books, - the routing was insufficient, - you're better off with the Coursebook by Catherine Paquet et al, - As for Sybex Switching, - it was okay, but again, you're better off with the BCMSN coursebook Karen Webb and some info off the web or hands-on with 1900/5000 switches. As for Remote Access & Support, I'm yet to sit them, however, not depending on Sybex books!

I've collected CP Prep. Library, CP Cert. Guide, Sybex books, and McGrawHill, and accidently Syngress (do not recommend)

The most suitable I've found would be the CP publications, either the Prep. Library or Cert Guides. - Both good choices!

Hi,
I used both cybex and cisco press. The sybex is easier to read and understand but does not cover all the topics well.
Cisco press is tougher but it maps well with the exam objective and is very, very similar to the cisco manual.

So make you choice. I used BOTH....

use Cisco Press Books !

Sybex books, just like the Coriolis Exam Preps are easy to read but are just not good enough.

I have only passed the switching exam, but would read the sybex book first, to get 'the big picture', then go on to read the cisco press, to get the 'nitty-gritty'.

Good luck

Lammle's CCNA Study Guide is quite bad; the Errata is a book in itself, and it has plenty other mistakes left uncorrected. If the CCNP Study Guide is the same quality, you're better off keeping your money in your pocket.

Did you get the answer to your "ping non-existent host" problem (in the CCNA forum) yet?!

My advice is this:

Depending on your level of understanding and network "expertise", the Sybex book is very much sufficient. I used the Sybex CCNA book and it served me well. If you already have a core knowledge and understanding, the sybex line of CCNA/CCNP books are sufficient and I think they are very well written. If you are lacking in areas... the cisco press will provide you with a more extensive explanation - I would certainly read the sybex book first then follow up with the cisco press to fill in the gaps.

You really need to get over it man. I mean really, let it go already. Don't worry, you're forgiven.
Now on to your question. I have found that Sybex is an easier read than Cisco Press, but lacks the depth that Cisco Press offers. I'm not real sure about the CCNP (because I only use Cisco Press), but the Sybex study guide was WAY off base for the CCNA. However, the Sybex study notes, were right on the money . . . go figure.

Well to put this one to rest....
I felt the Sybex CCNA book was on the money as was the Sybex CCNP switching
study guide; Can't say for the rest since I have taken them yet but I am pretty confident with sybex; Use your judgement and never rely on just one book.... study MANY sources

One big thing for sybex is they will give you the book in PDF that is great for me because I read on my laptop all the time but I found that cisco press is a better book. I think if you can swing it you should buy both books. It is investment in you future. I cant tell you how many times I have went back to my book to look up something I read before but have not had to use much in the field. This is where the book on PDF is a big bonus for me. I will be the first to say that reading can get old so sometimes it is nice to pick up a book that was wrote from someone else to get a fresh point of view. The people that write these books are very smart but I can bet you money they did not just sit down one day and start to write...... they gathered notes and many sources read rfc and broke everything down. Just think how long it takes to write a book on this stuff. My point is they used many sources to learn it and write about it so should we. If one day you want to say I am the big daddy and everyone wants me to work on their network,,,and the cisco helpdesk calls me to find out how to fix problems they cant fix than you got to study your ### off and practice practice reread and reread this stuff until you are the man.
