Is this experience worth it?

| Hey guys,
I just moved to South Florida, and was designing voice and data long haul networks at Worldcom in San Antonio. I thought about taking a job pulling cable down here, but it would be a significantly large pay cut from the other positions I am looking at. How many of you have done this? I know some of you guys have. How is it for experience? I already have WAN design experience, but would eventually like to be on my own designing and installing networks. Was the experience beneficial? My guess is that you would get really good at wiring up networks, and see lots of different situations and problems, and could really use the experience down the road if you wanted to have your own company.... any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

| I wouldn't do it because pulling cabling is a lot of hard work that takes very little skill. I would take another job. Here in San Diego we pay very little to have some one pull the cable for us. I would focus on more on LAN Administration. | |

| I think it's a job that an inexperienced young person could use to get an idea about network infostructure, but I would advise against an experienced person taking a step back unless it became a financial necessity.

| Cabling is in fact very hard work. No one has mentioned the bad itch you get when dealing with insulation in ceilings....it sucks! Cutting holes in sheet rock and running fish tape is also a huge pain. Sanding fiber terminations....yuk.
It's not worth it!
Good Luck!
Sorry to see a Texan leave for Florida.. | |

| Hey guys, great feedback! Thanks a bunch! Well I think that I am going to look in another direction since I saw the same job I was doing in Texas paying quite a bit more here. Oh by the way, my wife's family is from down here, and we came back down for that reason! I miss Texas a ton!! Good food, nice people in Texas, but you have to remember one thing..... Happy wife.... Happy life! anyway, I told her that I would give it 3 years and then we are going back to Texas... Again, thanks for all the input!
