| Sorry if this has been posted, but Sun is now offering free downloads of their Solaris 8 Intel or Sparc based OS. I downloaded all three iso...i had to manually put the .iso extension on the files to allow my CD burner to write the CDs, but once I did that, I didn't have a whole of problems with the install. You will need three blank CDs. The downloads aren't huge (800 MB total) and it is a great product to play with. More info here: http://www.sun.com/solaris/binaries/ | |

| Thanks for the link jhardt. | |

| Just what is Solaris anyway? Is this a Unix based security software?
Thanks

| Solaris is a unix based operating system by Sun Microsystems. Excellent for engineering apps, etc...
very stable and will find in use in alot of high tech
places that need raw speed and power. Looks like sun is
going the way of Linux and offering the binaries up on the web. You can also pay sun (75.00) and they'll mail you a copy of the software on CD but if you have a fast connection you can download the product ISO and burn a CD.

Yes, if you replace Win98 with Solaris.
Just kidding.  | |

| EvenFlow:
Solaris 8 comes with an excellent boot loader
and a GUI for easy partitioning and install. So
you can easily dual boot (or more) with it. This
box I'm on right now has Win98 and Sol 8 living
happily together. No fancy footwork required.
BTW, thought I should share this link for all
you people wishing to do more complicated multi
boot systems;

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm about to blow away my linux partitions and put solaris 8 on my home machine just for kicks. That link appears to answer just about every question I had. I've run Solaris 7 x86 on some standalone machines before and it's time I got back into the habit....
