| Hi,
Hey all, have'nt been around for awhile. The wife and I just had our second child, a baby girl..
Anyways I've been trying to crank out the Sql Admin test for a small promotion at work. It's very boring but I am almost there. Searching around I noticed that having all these certificates can get you a lot of jobs but, having a college degree ( something I don't) gives you much more oppurtunity and I think security, It will get in the door faster for an interview then someone who does not have one. either way since I dont really have the time to go back to school full time I've been loooking in to online schools, regentsuniversity.com to be exact, has anyone graduated or taken any courses here or at any other online schoool? is it worth my time? Please leave me some input on this? | |

| Congrats on your second child.
I don't know much about the online schools, but the community college I'm going to right now offers Internet courses for the more commonly taken academics. I'm taking two of my five classes over the Internet right now. They're great in that you can do the work any time you want, and typicaly require less time then a traditional class does.
The benifits of a college degree are very simular to certifications. Just as there are plenty of "paper" certs, there are also plenty of Computer Science majors who don't know the difference between IP and IPX (actually, most of them are like that at my college). It can only help you though, so I'd suggest going for it. A lot of the higher level positions require a four year degree of some sort. What are you thinking of majoring in? | |

| The university name was changed to http://www1.excelsior.edu/itweb/itcts01.html
They don't actually offer classes but instead allow you to collect credit through certs, work exp, clep exams and regular college credits. I am not sure if that is the way i wanna go, I like the idea of getting credit for the certs I achieved but at the same time I'd like a consistent curriculm. I now there are others out there, but I have just started looking into it. I'll check into the community college to see if they offer online courses!
Orginally i was working towards an Associate degree in Information Systems and am just 15 credits shy of that, but i don't think that is going to be enough to satisfy me. So I'll probably go for the BS in CS. I think with a BS in CS, MCSE and a CCNP or CCIE you can go anyway and do anything. Going into an interveiw with that under your belt has got to make you feel pretty friggin confident.

| I just don't think you can compare a cert with a degree. Computer science degree is programming. Java, C++, Corba, etc. I didn't learned about subnets, ip, networking stuff when I went to university.
A 4yr degree stays with you forever. I invested time and money to it and it has paid off. Certs are a phase, they come and go. Right now everyone is jumping on the Cisco wagon... lets see how far it goes.
