| Anyone
I am installing a cable modem soon at home ( 512 kbps)and wish to know how I can network it to my other PCs at home ?
I would like to use a low ranging router as my gateway - is this possible?
Any ideas/ plans would be appreciated.
I want to have my network secured from outside 'attacks' bcoz I use P2P applications.
Which is the best / most cost effective way to do this ?

| Hi all,
I use the Barricade Broadband Router SMC7004BR from SMC www.smc-europe.com/ . It has a built in 4 port 10/100Mb switch. Cost me about £90.

I am still in the process of deciding at the moment.
Telewest's Blueyonder looks pretty good.
What's your opinion ?

Yep, I'm with Blueyonder and have been for about a 18 months and I would highly recommend them. Apart from the odd glitch it's been great. If you go with BY they use the MAC address of you nic as your identification so if you get the Barricade router it clones your MAC address so you don't even need to let them know. Really easy.

| I was using a Linksys router and it blew up with no provocation from me. It has limited firewall features.
If you have ties to the CNAP (Cisco Networking Academy Program) you can purchase a Cisco 806 Router for $250 US, IOS included. You can download the firewall feature set for free also. It has proved to be a wonderful addition to my LAN. | |

Unfortunately I don't have contacts with the CNAP.

Any thoughts on how I can protect my network on a limited budget.
I want a robust router /switch that will connect my SOHO Lan to the internet on a cable connection

Shift 3, £ is UK Sterling (pounds), the currency we use - typically £1 is about $1.30, so the price Tronn referred to is $120 to 130.
You have cents we have pence.

You can specify your MAC address on the Linksys too.
