hi!

i think i screwed up big time this time!!!! i have a AS2511-RJ and i have 2mb DRAM with 8mb FLASH ROM. actually what i did is i installed the wrong ios on my router and i have a problem now. when i switch on the router i dont get any of my interfaces. no e0 no s0 no aux nothing... but i can use the con port. since due to this i cannot use 'copy tftp flash' anymore since i cannot c any of my interfaces. is there any other way to go about this? i have tried a few things here n there. i tried to use the write command but all in vain. maybe u guys n gals can enlighten me here. but pls if u can help do help and dont just read this n go away even if u can help me. pls tell me what can i do to rectify this stupid mistake of mine...

thanks. hoping to get a reply ASAP. thanks.

hi!

thank u all for ur help but i got my router up n running. off all the things i tried i got it up in just a few seconds. actually i uploaded an old and bad IOS and due to this all the ports on the router were not even beeing detected. this was a major problem since i could not c any of my interfaces... no ethernet non of my 16 async ports and nothing like that but only the aux was working. i sat on it all day n all night trying to get something off the net and from this site but i found it on some site which said to use the confreg command and change the reg. value from 0x2102 to 0x2101 and then work with the IOS. this way i got the old IOS in and worked with it and i set up the telnet session and i could get access to the TFTP server and then i uploaded the new IOS in it. it was great fun.... but was very tensed coz if i could not fix it i would have had to give it to the cisco ppl here and they charge like hell and right now i cannot afford it. anyway i hope this might help some one as dumb as me.

but i do have one complain about this forum. so many ppl come n c so many requests n help n so many stuff but only a handfull ppl really reply. also there r too many questions related to unnecessary questions about braindumps and all that. and for inquiries related to braindumps almost all ppl who read it do answer it. but help is always slow and little but then it does come...

also i was interested in a few things. i wanted a CCO login if it is possible for a limited time so i can d/l the IOS of my router. also i wanted to know where i can get cheep n good FLARH n DRAM on the net which caters to the Middle-East as i am living in Kuwait.

if possible pls tell me where i can get the IOS for my router. i have a AS2511-RJ with 2mb DRAM and 8mb FLASH ROM. i was wondering if u guys/gals can help me. thanks. i hope this is not a stupid or weird request to ask for in this form.

anyway thanks to all for ur help and co-operation.

Here's a piece of a thread I posted on this board a few weeks ago.

OK, The reason I was upgrading was a buggy IOS 12.0 ??, It wasn't recognizing any of my ethernet cards. So TFTP would'nt of worked anyway I would've tried it. No ethernet interfaces no IP no TFTP. Either ways I still had no room in Flash so I executed erase flash filename. Then I rebooted and it bought me into rmon> from here I used xmodem to grab the flash file from my pc. xmodem is slow as molasses so I change a confreg to use 115200 and adjusted the hyper terminal session to do the same.

My problem was alomost the same as yours and xmodem saved my day. xmodem uses the (slow) console connection to transfer images to the router.
Sometimes it's good idea to perform a search on a forum before posting, chances are you'll find someone who has already experienced the same problem and has posted a solution.

hello,

the reason i poster here was a little different. first of all i tried to search a post like urs but as u know there r so many unwanted posts that the more real n important ones r sometimes not seen. anyway there is still a reason y i could not do as u did coz my IOS does not support the format command so i could not use it anyway. and also i dont know so much about routers and stuff i am still in the learning stage. give me time and i too will be a senior member here advising others like me...

hey haseeb_eng where r u in Kuwait? where u working n where u staying? actually i am looking for a job so maybe i would get in touch with u.

anyway thanks all for all ur help n support. this really is a nice place to ask all sorts of questions.

thanks and all keep well......

Gohar, a hint for next time is to research how big the IOS file is (not your problem this time, but 12.x doesn't fit on 8M of flash) and more importantly for you the amount of RAM the IOS needs to operate because I suspect that was your problem. Not sure if you can see that info on Cisco's website without a CCO account, but many here can help you with that question.

If I am correct, 8MB Flash should be able to hold IOS 12.x . But you also will need 8MB DRAM to run it. With that litle amount of memory, you better stick to IOS that you have recieved with the router. Since IOS in ROM is only a limited subset of the full IOS.
Before you upgrade, you should always backup your current IOS, aspecialy if you do not have CDrom copy of it.

You can get 16MB DRAM/FLASH memory cheep on EBAY.COM , that is if they will deal with you from USA. Your best bet is do search for stuff coming from East Asia, like Hong Kong. There has to be outlet, and I am sure they will deal with you. Some resellers will deal with you from USA, if you can secure them a payment trough a bank witch has connection to Americans banks. It is worth a try.

Good luck. and Happy Romadon (hope I spelled it right).

Maybe IP only IOS 12.X (never used that cut down ver) will fit on 8M but most use the multiprotocol for the 2500 and that's like 13M, so you need 16M RAM and 16M flash the most a 2500 can handle.

I was curious, so I went and looked.

12.0.20 (the latest GD code in the 12.x series) has the following basic requirements for a 2501-2525:
IP Only - 8 Flash, 4 RAM
IP Plus - 8 Flash, 6 RAM
IP/IPX/AT/DEC - 8 Flash, 6 RAM
Enterprise Plus - 16 Flash, 6 RAM
IP/FW - 8 Flash, 6 RAM
IP/FW Plus IPSEC 56 - 16 Flash, 8 RAM

Moving up to the 12.1 series with 12.1.11, we see this for a 2501-2525:
IP Only - 8 Flash, 8 RAM
IP Plus - 16 Flash, 8 RAM
IP/IPX/AT/DEC - 16 Flash, 8 RAM
Enterprise Plus - 16 Flash, 16 RAM
IP/FW - 16 Flash, 10 RAM
IP/FW Plus IPSec 56 - 16 Flash, 10 RAM
A 2610 w/ IP Only requires - 8 Flash, 24 RAM

And finally, the 12.2 series with 12.2.6 on a 2501-2525:
IP Only - 16 Flash, 10 RAM
IP PLus - 16 Flash, 8 RAM (heh, go figure)
IP/IPX/AT/DEC - 16 Flash, 8 RAM
Enterprise Plus - 16 Flash, 16 RAM
IP/FW - 16 Flash, 10 RAM
IP/FW Plus IPSec 56 - 16 Flash, 10 RAM
A 2610 w/ IP Only requires - 8 Flash, 24 RAM
The latest in the 12.2T train requires 16 Flash, 10 RAM for a 2500.

So there. I'm no longer curious.

I am glad that you are up and running. Next time you have this problem, you can also do a copy xmodem flash. This will allow you to send an ios image using xmodem through your locally connected application (i.e. hyperterminal). After you do copy xmodem flash, you will go to 'Transfer' in your drop down Toolbar, choose xmodem, browse for your file (ios image) and click send. Since you will be using your console port it will be relatively slow. I say about 2 hours for an 8M file.
