| Hi. I am 17 and have my CCNA. I am currently in a Cisco Networking Academy at my High School. The way the academy is set up the CCNA and CCNP is split into 8 semesters. I am in semester 5 which covers the BCSN. The teacher says that this semester cannot be covered in 18 weeks and should be given a full year. I think I can push it in 18 weeks and take the exam in early January. I have the full curiculum and study material. We also have access to Cisco 2600 series Routers Catalyst 1900 series Switches a frame relay and a ISDN switch. I was wondering if I should go ahead and take the test in January or not. Most of the feedback I've seen is that this test is too hard to try to go ahead and do.
Thank you for your time.

| hello,
I studied BSCN for about six months, but it was the first exam I'd taken in a couple of years so i wanted to make sure I knew it, plus I don't get to use the 'fancy' stuff like OSPF and BGP...
There are guys here who say they read the book for a couple of weeks and passed the exam. they probably know more about the job that we do so they have an advantage...
I reckon that if you work at it, read the book for, say, two hours a day and also get in some time with the hardware then you could pass in 18 weeks.
It's down to you really, and it depends where you're starting from. Did you find the CCNA relatively easy or was it tough going? How much practice have you had with the hardware? Have you got the 'basics' of configuring routers fixed in your mind?
Good luck.
Regards

| Well actually for the past 2 years I have been working with routers and I basically have IGRP and and RIP ingrained into my skull. I got a 956\1000 on the CCNA so I figured it was relatively easy. We are learning OSPF now and I don't see too much of a problem with it. So I guess we will see.
Thank you for your time.

| Lain,
ya bro, the bcsn is all hype. I studied for a month and passed with ease. It's not that hard at all. A full year seems ridiculous to me. Hell, you could pound it out during Christmas break or maybe during the thanksgivin' weekend. hehe
so ya as peterd said its all up to you. if you want to spend a year/18 weeks/or a month on it by all means, go for it!
anyway good luck

| Yeah thats what I think I'll do. I do have other classes ya know. So I figure that I finish the semester in December and take the 3 weeks in Christmas Break hardcore studing. Then take it in January like the weekend before we get back. I just wanted to make sure I'm not jumping ahead of myself.
After BCSN is Semester 6. Remote Access.
Thanks for the feedback.

| Hi Latin,
I am currently studying for the BCSN exam ! My logic is that i will study to pass the CCNP for the certification, as my employer needs it for Gold partnership, but i would keep in mind that you will have to prove what you know when you go for a job. The certification gets you in the door but you will have to apply what you know as well, so work to understand not just to pass your test. My employer has suggested that any new employees will have to do some lab work for the interview even if you have a CCNP, it could be just his view, or it could become a standard ????.
Enjoy and good luck. | |

| Dont get me wrong dude. I'm not some punk from the street who saw computers as an opportunity and went for the networking route. I love computers as well as networking and I know my stuff. Next year I'll be in college going all the way to my PH.D. so dont think I'm just doing this for the heck of it. | |

| I've been following this thread. I like ur determination so how about this for inspiration. I took Bscn today and I slammed it with a very good score. It took me about 2 weeks to prepare. All I can say is if u get a little hands on and know the technology behind the commands then the exam will be a mere formality. I should be taking Bcran very soon. | |
