Author What is your life style like?

2001-01-24, 3:37 am

Hey, guys...

I was just wondering.. It seems everyone in this forum is such a hard worker. Everyone is passing one by one for towards CCNP. It really motivates me and makes me feel like I have to do my best also.

Just wondering.. what kind of life style does everyone have? Do you study at least couple of hours every night? I think most of us do work full time and kind of hard to find a time to study myself..Where do you find the time?

I have been putting off the exam and would like to be motivated.. but it is so hard to concentrate on studying sometimes.. How does everyone do it??

If you care to share that with everyone else..

Zig -
i use a few methods to prepare.
OJT is available but very sporadic (for now). I work with a couple of NP's (both on their way to IE) and another guy who is half-way NP, so i try to glean as much insight as they will offer (without touching NDA). luckily (i think) they offer more real-world exposure than test-centric information.

but i still need to know the Cisco Way. so i study. my job affords me some time to study and i usually study 1-3 hours after work. what's nice is that since i don't get off until late in the evening, my study time doesn't interfere with family.

i just find that if i try to find time it will never surface. it is up to me to make time. before i worked the shift i do (in a NOC), i would study before work (again not interferring with family time). it's always there, it's just a matter of making use of it.

good luck. you can do it. and you can still have a life.

Ziggy, I hope this is helpful.... I studied about 2 hours a day. One of those hours was lunch time (even with my pals invitations, had to say no), and one was before or after work, (I have a very understanding wife). On sundays I would spend about 4 to 5 hours at the library or somewhere quiet (evryone else was watching the game or going out to eat) packing my noggin with cisco. It seems to be one of those things of commitment, like someone going back to college, except self study is when your the class, instructor and student....

And after stamping the CCNP logo on my resume and sending it out. I have been on two interviews this week, and expect an offer soon. It was worth it...

Hi Zig,
As you can see at the time this post was created it is pretty late. I just finished studying for 4 hours which I try to do Monday - Friday. Saturday's and Sunday's I double that amount! Luckily my wife understands what this means to me and doesn't mind. My method is continue this schedule until I feel ready for a test. I take the test and take a week off then start again for the next test.I have only the CIT to go which I will take 2/2.Motivation is the key. I've been in IT for 14 years and slouched for the past 13 and a half. Given the opportunity to work on Cisco products woke me up and cannot get enough learning. Well enough about me!!! Best of luck to you in your studies.

I work, study and baby sit in my life.

My job is not so busy. I can sometimes spare one hour in office to study, use my PC of course, and then stay behind half to one hour after work to study. At home I study when my baby is sleeping during holdiay.

I hope I can finish my CCNP and CCDP in the coming 6 months to end this painful life style.

I too am looking forward to the end of this journey. I am registered in the Cisco Academy and spend all day Saturday in class. Monday and Wednesday night I have two other classes. Monday through Friday from 7-4 I am working. Any time that is not mentioned, is spent studying, doing hands on at school, or sleeping. I am fortunate that I am not currently involved or have any children. For the moment, Cisco is my life. I started the Academy classes in September last year and passed the CCNA in December. Take the switches exam on Friday, and my goal is one test every 3 weeks until I am done. After that, I want to take and pass the CCIE written and Lab by the end of the year. Loftly goals? Yes, but I am commited. I keep reminding myself that, a year and a half of having no life is going to give me a much better one. I am willing to make that trade off. And besides, I LOVE IT!!!

Sometimes it is hard but you have to have self disipline that's for sure, I study between 3 and 4 hours a night, or until I drift off into slumber land!! Gotta keep that mind in motion...........

I base almost my whole day around studying, I don't study all day but I am aware all day that I need to study and any minute I can get i try to use. 50 hours a week job, new handy man special house, wife, 2 kids and a puppy. I've invested in a few time management books. check out "How to get control of your time and your life" by Alan Lakein,

One time slot that I have learned to use is my commute to and from work 1hr 20 min each way, I get some much done in that time it's incredible.

To CCNPSOON,

I was wondering where you are taking CISCO academy classes? Do you take them at the community college? I actually live around the Clearwater area... if you could share that with me, that will be great!

Thanks, Zig

Ziggy,
Just to let you know, SPJC has Cisco Academy classes, the classes are held at the STAR center located on Belcher and Brian Dairy, they have CCNA as well as CCNP classes. I took the CCNA classes last year, they are quite pricy and especially the CCNP classes which I can no way afford.......so CCNP I'm doing on my own.You can register for these classes at any of the SPJC campus's
