Dial Up And MAC Addresses
|
|
|
| Hi all.
Just wondering if dial-up modems have MAC addresses like NIC's do. According to many I've spoken to, dial-up modems don't have MAC addresses, but when I run "winipcfg", I have a MAC address.
Can someone please explain? Thanks in advance. | |

| dial-up modems can have MAC addresses. and dial-up adapters can generate MAC addresses.
the following is from http://www.cs.ruu.nl/wais/html/na-d...faq/part08.html
The Dial-up Adapter generates a "fake" MAC address (a 48-bit number representing an Ethernet address) so that protocols designed for Ethernet will work on it, such as IPX. It will generate a random number for the MAC address each time you dial in. This happens REGARDLESS of what protocol you dial in with.
hope this helps.

AFAIK "winipcfg" shows the MAC address of the NIC in your W95/W98 station.
Cheers!
