Author Simulator software

Just passed CCNA (used a # of different sources) - want to start CCNP, do not have access to Cisco gear. I have the Sybex CCNA
router sim (Ok, from what I can tell), I have the link to www.routersim.com (not sure of the quality, any comments?) - is there any simulator software that is REALLY good ($ no object, just want REALY good, and legal)? Biggest fear: getting the cert w/no hands-on, walking into a new job and looking like a moron. Thanks for the help, folks.

routersim.com has switch sim out for CCNP,
but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't vouch for the quality. The Cisco Press CIM (Cisco interactive Mentor) - Expert Labs IP Routing is ok, they limit the commands to just what te lab covers for OSPF, EIRGP, BGP, and Frame-Relay.

I use switchsim for BCMSN test. It doesnt give you a complicated scenario to work with but at least you can practice on cisco commands. I did not see any 2900xl switch, only 1900 and 5000 and that is not good since 2900xl uses an iol different from that one of 1900. But at the end its still worthy to buy it.

If money is no object, I would suggest to get the real stuff. In case you want to pursue something other then CCNP like CCIE. It'll be really good to have a home lab. J/my 2 1/10 cents.

I am using routersim's SwitchSim and CiscoPress LAN Switching CIM for my switching test. Both are good, but I really like the CiscoPress CIM a lot. I don't care much for SwitchSim. Here's my feed back on both:

Switchsim is more of a Switch Simlulator, it lets you enter any commands it supports at any time, which is nice. The thing I do not like is it doesn't make changes to thevconfiguration for you. For example if you enable a port to be full duplex in the simulator and then issue the show port command, it doesn't show that you made any change. If you assign a port to say, VLAN 2 and another port to vlan3 then issue the show vlan command it doesn't show which vlans the ports belong to, it shows all belonging to vlan1 or just port 1/2 to vlan 2. Also if you change the spanning tree, it really doesn't make any changes to the spanning tree configuration when you view it. These are the reasons I don't like it.

The LAN CIM is more of a CBT, that has you configure Catalyst 5500 switches. You learn about the topics and then you configure them. Most people don't like the CIM because is lets you enter only the commands that contain to the module for the lab, it doesn't let you play around. The thing I like about it is, though it doesn't let you do what you want in a switch, it shows you how to configure the switch in many ways. They also have labs for ATM in the CIM. With this product I have understood how the switches work so much better and the commands as well. Also in the labs it tells you why you are issuing a command, where in the Switchsim is just tells you to enter the commands.

yahyah,
I would say I would love to help you, but I have to hold true to the anti piracy law for the CIM. I bought it for $199 and I feel it is well worth it. I have paid for all of my books and learning material from my own pocket and it is so rewarding to me and means that much more to me when I do get my certificates. Plus if you are truly serious about getting Cisco certified then you will make some sacrifices to get there. I don't think its fair for someone to have to pay for his education and then someone else finds ways to get the same things illegally. Beside, I know the people at CiscoPress, I am working on a project with them, they are very nice people and have families too. I would hate for any of then to lose their jobs because people are illegally copying their software, and for me to even be a part of it. My advice it you can find it on the Internet for about $150. Buy it and used it. When you do get your CCNP you will feel like you accomplished a lot.
