Author Simple Routing Question

2000-08-13, 3:55 am

Hey, everyone...
I was wondering if someone could help me out with this one routing problem I'm having.

I have two cisco 2500 series routers (router-1 and router-2) set up back to back via sync. serial ports.

I have one workstation on the ethernetwork configured on the port e0 of router-2.

When I'm in the router-2, I can ping the workstation just fine. Frome the router-1, I can ping the router-2's serial port and the ethernet, but I can't ping the workstation.

I'm using RIP protocol as the routing protocol.

Here is the config for router-1 and router-2...

************Router-2*********************
interface Ethernet0
ip address 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
bandwidth 10000
!
interface Serial0
ip address 172.16.1.2 255.255.255.248
bandwidth 128
!
!

router rip
network 172.16.0.0
network 10.0.0.0
!
!
no ip classless

******************* Router-1 ***************
interface Ethernet0
no ip address
shutdown
!
!
interface Serial0
ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.248
bandwidth 128
clockrate 64000
!
!
!
!
router rip
network 172.16.0.0
!
!
no ip classless

******************************
**************
Why am I not able to ping the workstation from the router-1?

I see e0 and s0 of router-2 are up/up.
Also, s0 of router-1 is up/up.
When I do show ip route in the router-1, the router-1 sees the network 10.0.0.0 via 172.16.1.2

Can anyone answer my question? Greatly appreciated.

The configuration looks fine, What is the IP address of the workstation? I am just trying to simulate the problem in my set up. So that I can find out the problem.

Just to confirm the problem, can you change your IP address as follows;

Router-1
S0 - 172.16.20.1
Router-2
S0 - 172.16.20.2
E0 - 172.16.30.1
Workstation - 172.16.30.2
Subnetmask is 255.255.255.0 for all.
And also set the clockrate and Bandwidth on the DCE side of your router.

This is the configuration I have in my routers and It works fine.

I am not saying your configuration is wrong. This is just to confirm the things are working. Once we confirm this, we can go in to troubleshooting.

Couple of things:

1. No need for a bandwidth statement on your Ethernet0 of Router2.

2. You failed to mention the IP address of the workstation which may be your problem.

Hey guys.
Thanks for your comments and tips...

The IP address of the workstation is 10.1.1.3 255.255.255.0..

Hey, Ravi, I changed the address of the serial ports as you said, however, this is a virtual lab on the internet and I do not have the access to the workstation to change it's address. I doubt that the ip address is the issue here since I am able to ping the workstation from router-2 without any problem. I just found out that the other users of the lab are experiencing the same problem. Maybe it's the way that the owner of the lab set up the lab that's causing the problem. I'll email him with this question.

Mean while, if anyone can find any problem with the configuration, please let me know.

Thanks alot!!

kschon,

I would guess that it is a problem with the PC. It sounds like it either has no default gateway configured or it has been configured incorrectly.

You can ping it from router 2 because it sends the ping response direct to the routers MAC address, but to get to router 1's network it must use a default gateway ( 10.1.1.2 in this example)

hope this helps...
