Author anyone taken the ccnp security exam(s)?

2000-12-28, 6:48 pm

has anyone taken the security exam(s)?
from 1st jan i think there are going to be 4 exams to achieve it.
any books available?
i have to be working with pix and the ids (formerly netranger) and have only the supplied config guide for the pix firewall 4.4
whats yr take on why cisco made the security into 4 exams and yr opinion on the market value of a guy who passes (and knows) the stuff.
i would rather concentrate on ccie frankly but since i have to be doing the pix and ids thing i was just thinking.

I've not yet taken any of the security exams, but I'm heading that way in the very near future.
CiscoPress is releasing a book called "Managing Cisco Network Security" which is just their coursebook for the class along the same lines as the BCRAN and other CP books. While amazon.com says it's being released in December they've only got a couple more days to get it out. My bookstore says sometime in January is when they expect it. Judging by what the course teaches, this is very much a basic intro to the Pix, IOS security features and some VPN stuff.
I've spoken with people who have taken the MCNS exam and they say it is very elementary. I would imagine that Cisco is trying to beef up this specialization and make it more comprehensive with the introduction of IDS stuff the addition of the Altiga VPN stuff.
Syngress has a book out called Managing Cisco Network security that could be considered useful only because there's nothing else out that compares to it yet. It has too many errors even by normal technical book standards (why can't O'Reilly come out with an in-depth Cisco book. Their books always rock!)
Check out the Cisco web site for Pix stuff as there is a lot of good information there.
5.1 info is here http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td...x_v51/index.htm
a better page, though it requires a cco id is http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Suppor...iguration_Tools
Config examples that I've used are here http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td...ig/examples.htm
They're relevant to 5.0.
As for IDS information, I strongly recommend Northcutt's book "Network Intrustion Detection." It's not Cisco specific; it's just an excellent book on intrusion detection.
Keep us up to date with your progress.
