A work related question on a 2511 dialup router
|
|
|
| here is an bit of my config for a 2511 router that is used where I work
for dialup up internet for our staff.
!!!!!!!
interface Group-Async1
description connected to Dial-inPCs_modem
ip unnumbered Ethernet0
ip tcp header-compression
encapsulation ppp
no ip mroute-cache
async mode dedicated
peer default ip address pool Cisco2511-Group-1
compress stac
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap
group-range 1 16
!!!!!!
Can someone advise me on a way to improve the performance of my modem pool.
There 4 external USrobotic 56K Modems
and 4 Practical Peripheral 56K modems.
Am I incorrect in thinking that these will only provide a 33.6k connection for our dialup accounts, due to the fact that consumer 56k modems can only upload at 336 speeds. If so what brand would provide the
desired connect speeds.

| 1. Try eliminating the "compress stac" thing.
Let the modems do hardware compression. And test. I mean benchmark before and after.
2. As a 2nd thing , add the statement "no fair-queue before" the "no CDP enable " statement. Benchmark and test

If you wanna get 56 Kb, you should use PRI line.

| Analog modems are your problem. You can't keep switching from analog to digital and still maintain 56k. If you want to support the newer modem standards you have to keep it digital from the telco all the way to your access device. Get a router that supports a PRI and digital modems. A 3600 would be a good start.

| Thanks for the info.
Not being a real ISP we probably won`t go that route, our staff will have to find
56k connections elsewhere, we are only charging 5 bucks a month so they can`t really complain.
We probably getting a 3640 to replace
"or complement" our 4500 series router fairly
soon.
oh and transilvanian, thanks for the help
the performance tips you suggested gave me a little more bandwidth. |
