Author Set Based vs. IOS Based

2000-09-27, 1:50 am

I don't have access to a switch that I can "play" with due to the fact that the one we have is in production, and my boss kinda frowns on us practicing on them...Go figure.
Anyway, I have a switch emulator, but it is for an IOS based switch only (i.e 1900 series). Does anyone know of a simulator that also supports a set based switch (i.e 5000)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cisco Interactive Mentor - Lan Switching

It retails $299, but you can find them on ebay. I haven't been able to find them anywhere else. In fact, I am selling that one there now.

Hello from a new guy. In December, you can knock $100 off of that price...to $199.95
at Ciscopress.com. They started selling CIMs
a month or two ago.
I self-studied 6 months for CCNA 1.0, passed in July. Started C/N/Academy Unit 5 last week
which is BCSN(Routing 2.0) and I'm sure wishing I had more hands on, but I'm at the right place for that. The instructors said we could come in on non class days to practice labs....gonna hold them to that!!
Adios,

Unbiased answer?

You won't benefit much from owning a switch. Odds are you want to work for a large company sometime and you won't find an affordable Cat5xxx anywhere. My advice as expressed many times is save your money and read read read. When you get the chance it will come back to you.

Yankee is right on there - I just read the Cisco Press a few times and used the Boson BCMSN test #2 for some practice and kicked out a 901/1000.

Focus:
I had Set command Qs out the wazoo and a couple of IOS-based ones too, some type in the blanks, choose 2s and 3s.

Concepts covered include (but not excluded to): ISL, VLANs, VTP, CGMP, Spanning Tree, Choose a product for the scenario, Multicasting (had a couple there, but don't worry too much about a calculator to convert - as Yankee stated in another post out there somewhere, you will see on the test what we mean), Ethernet and EtherChannel, No HSRP, and many more - but . . . THIS CAN CHANGE AT ANY TIME !! Cisco reserves the right to cover any and all of the area as listed on the exam outline from their web site. Cover your assets and use the Outline as your guide. You could be the first to get blasted with 10-12 HSRP Qs.

It can be done !!

GOOD LUCK !!

hi fordyce

you say you used the boson exam 2. I am using 1. Is there any difference between the two, or should i purchase 2 also.

In your reply you said -

You said choose 2s and 3s, what do u mean by that, and what type of set based questions did you have to type, where they hard?

Thanks

Actually, after thinking about it some more:
I had more Choose 2s and only one Choose 3 - I was referring to the multiple choice answers that had an answer of "Choose 2 (or 3) answers of the following choices"

As for the type-in questions - NOT HARD is you have any experience on switches (both set-based and IOS-based) you should be FINE !!

Now of the Qs that you have to choose the right set-based or IOS-based commands, they are specific, yet not difficult. If you can go through the Cisco Press book and use the summary information for each chapter, you can comprise your own list of the commands and that will help you - DO NOT TRY TO SHORT-CUT THAT !!! If you do, you will not remember them as well. Go and find them for yourself and make your own list - I did and then to cover my buttski from any reprisal from Cisco - I destroyed it last night in a little victory dance (a la Survivor).

Give yourself the following time to study and you should be ok:
If you have . . .
No experience, good memory - 4 weeks
No experience, bad memory - 6 months
Little experience, good testing skills - 3 weeks
Little experience, bad testing skills - 3 months
Lots of experience, good testing skills - 2,3 days
Lots of experience, bad testing skills - 3 weeks.

Hope this helps !!

GOOD LUCK !!

I e-mailed Cisco about this today (as to when the 2.0 version of the CIM switching product will be available). They state on their website that it will be available in October of 2000. I will let you know of any details I get from them

Thanxs fordyce.
I have very little experience i.e. just once installed & config. 6 switches & going to give a shot at the CCNP exams which are tough. After reading your post i think i can make it by putting alot of efforts.

This is regarding the switching. Any idea about the routing, remote access & CIT exams.
I have a router simulation software from Todd Lamle & the Cisco student guide for all the papers which my friend lend me for photo copying. I have'nt joined any class.
