Author EXAM-640-503

just wondering if anyone could tell what the key differences are between the 640-403 and the 640-503--i accidentally bought the 403 study quide from sybex and im wondering if this is sufficient enough to study for the 503 exam

Not exactly sure of the differeces. I do know that the 503 Sybex book isn't due out until Feb 2001. But I was reading an earlier post from Yankee regarding the 407 vs. 507. What he was saying holds true in your case as well. Basically, there's been a change in requirements. In the case of the 507 exam up to 20%. If the same percentage holds true for the 503, why go into it with a 20% disadvantage right off the bat?

You could probably exchange your 403 book and pick up Sybex's 504 book on Switching (which picks up where the 507 leaves off). The 504 is available NOW and the cheapest place I found it is at Bookpool.com, where it's $30us compared to $50us at most bookstores.
Sorry I couldn't help any more.

From what I understand, the major difference between the two is that the 503 has a lot of BGP on it. I never took the 403, but I have taken (and passed) the 503 and there was a lot of BGP and OSPF on that test. I think that was a shortcoming of the 403. I used the book for the 403 and read Cisco's documentation on BGP, OSPF and EIGRP to supplement the book. It worked out fine.
Hope thi helps.

do know of any lab excercises that you practiced on for the exam?

The BGP stuff isn't that hard and considering that there's no bridging on the new exam, this is a mighty fine trade (bridging makes my head hurt). 403 books are probably adequate for the OSPF, EIGRP and redistribution. Learn BGP and you're pretty much set.
