I've been looking at certifications available and just found out about CIW. How well known is this in the industry? I have my MCSE but would like additional certifications to aid in the job search.

...Ok guys & girls, can anybody cement a little substance to LoriAyn's question?

After all, it appears that people in this particular forum are actually sitting the CIW exam.

I have never heard it asked for in any job announcement. It may be useful to potential webmasters, but Idoubt if it would be much of an sset to a system administrator. The knowledge gained might be useful, but the cert probably wouldn't make many other people take notice unless they were looking for a web designer.

It slices, it dices, It will make you teeth whiter and your hair thick and lusturus...

If being a Certified Internet Webmaster will help your career, then go for it.

It all depends on what you want to be when you grow up.

...Cheers guys, I'm also in total agreement with your comments.

Web site design is something I enjoy immensely, and if I'm honest potential clients have never leveled a CIW qualification in my general direction.

I'm CIW certified Level I and II and I don't think it has made one bit of difference to any employer to whom I have submitted my resume. I don't think anyone in that business even knows what CIW is. I know that I studied my you know what off to get it thinking it would open the door to some employment opportunities, but instead, for the few interviews I ever went on (I hardly ever got any replies to resume submissions)to try to get a job as a webmaster I found myself explaining to the interviewer what CIW was. After two years of looking I gave up and now I'm going in the direction of A+ and have just passed the hardware portion of the exam. I'm hoping that I will at least get a few interviews.

So from my experience (whatever that is worth) if you actually have your MCSE, I really don't think a CIW will mean anything, unless you want to be a web designer/programmer. Have you had any luck with getting a job?

Good luck,
Von

..Thank you for the feedback Vonique the second.

I for one truly appreciate your valuable input, due to the fact..that I'm currently considering studying for the exams.

That said..your feedback has been invaluable, thus I might not even bother wasting precious time on such subject matter.

It's a crying shame that a number of various exams still exist in the real world, and yet they have no industry recognition whatsoever!

If you're not looking to be a web designer or anything to do with web work, then it's not a cert to take. If your looking for resume fodder, then take the i-net+ exam from comptia and for $95 you can rollover the i-net to the CIW-a, 2 certs for 1 exam. You only have to the end of this year to do the rollover.

..Good point Iseals, however the main point in question is..are the CIW exams worth sitting?

Especially if you do happen to have a particular interest in the Web based design/development?

Hopefully the frequent flyers of this particular forum, all share a common interest in Web based design.

I have been a CIW Master Designer for
about 4 years now and it hasn't helped me in my job hunt. In fact I gave up because
most employers didn't seem to know anything about it.

I agree with what the others. I don't see how it would really be beneficial to you. If you want to strengthen your resume then
try something like CCNP or specialize in network security.

All you guys are missing the point of the certification.

Several said they could not get web jobs at all even with the cert, so they switched.

Here is the point: If you really are committed to a web job, are you better of with it, or without. Obviously you are better with it, even if just marginally.

Remember there are two reasons to get it (same as with a college diploma). One is for what the paper represents, but the other is the learning.

If you are really committed to a web job, then the things that you must learn to get the cert are very important.

If you already know everything, then the only downside is the two hours to take the test, and the $125. I can assure you that it is worth two hours plus $125.
