Author Bandwidth Question.

Ok I know what bandwidth is.
What I would like to know is there anyway to estimate bandwidth? For example website hits, page views, concurrent connections, downloading of files, streaming media?
for example say a 2 minute video.
or say 100,000 hits a month.

Thanks.

you are mixing metaphors. Bandwidth is simply how much information is transfered per unit time. Unit time is normally expressed in seconds. Information is normally expressed in bits per second on the WEB and bytes per second for I/O. Divide bits per second on the web by ten to get bytes since this is asynchronous data. Then you must consider sender bandwidth and receiver bandwidth. Hits are not a good measure because the amount of data is small, i.e. the HTML file. Streaming media generally is trottled to allow more users access(sender driven). Bandwidth measuring services like ziff-davis have too many variables to be really accurate.

Find a fast ftp server and see how long it takes to do download a file. Microsoft service packs are a good speed check. With 768Kb DSL I average around 85 to 90 KBytes per second.

Oh and for analog devices bandwidth is in cycles per second.

Ok.

What I was getting at is that my website currently allows me 5GB/month and for right now I use very little. However I am starting the process of actually getting some stuff on my site so its more then just a start page. I was thinking of putting video up there during development. I have also been given the option to upgrade to 25GB. I just wanted to know what kind of activity on a site would potentially reach the 5GB mark.

Thanks.

Oh that bandwith. That is the total number of bytes that you can send out per month. Lets say that you had a 2MB video. 5G/2M would be 2500 downloads per month - html file sizes - jpg, gif, png's etc. Not a whole lot, is it. Add pings and web crawls in there also and the occasional site dumper, archive site etc. Better not put a video of a funny flash animation up unless you are willing to pay. 5GB will get used fast.

Sites have been known to go down because the owner did not have a standing throttle order. Then one day they put up something that everyone wanted to see and a national e-zine picks it up and lists it. Think of a teenage girl with a cell phone that pays by the minute until the shocker at the end of the month.

You should estimate the followings:
- how many users will access your web site?
- how many pages to be access?
- how many grapics on a page?

*Watch your program coding such as chatroom, it may eat up lots of memory and network traffics.

Thanks.

I do have 600mb and I may be upgrading to the 25GB Bandwidth/month.

Thanks but I ended up getting my account upgraded for free. Looks good though. I'll consider it for furture projects which may be soon. I may be working with someone who could use the unlimited bandwidth.

Thanks again.
