Hi all,

I hope to begin study for the CIW Web Designer certification soon, but am a bit concerned over the budget. Although I want to learn how to use FrontPage, Flash, Dream Weaver and PaintShop,I will not be able to afford them all. Are there free evaluation versions available, or textbooks with practice CDs that do not require the actual software?

Thanks for your input.

If you are getting the study guides for the classes, they come with trial versions.

Thank you.

Do you mean the study guides from CIW, or any study guides? I'd like to study with the Certification Bible series.

I am taking the classes at a local college here in NY and have the Prosoft books for the class, but I also have the Bible series for Site-Designer (finished it) and E-commerce Designer (reading now).
Both Bibles are VERY good and I would recommend them to everyone. They are both very easy reading!

I also have used the test engine's and test prep downloads from Cert21.com and Examnotes.com.
Both also proved to be useful.

I will be going to take the Site-Designer test in 2 weeks, and I am well prepared for it!

You can download trial versions of most of these products from their manufacturers' websites. The trial will usually last 30 days - so download and install when you are really ready to use it.

That said, there really aren't very many product-specific questions on the exam, and the product-specific questions relate more to when you should use a specific product, than how you would go about a task using that product.

So it's important to understand issues such as: if you use Front Page, what are the server extensions required for? Or, if you use Flash, what impact might this have on your ability to alter/maintain your website? Or, what does DreamWeaver enable you to do that Front Page does not? etc.

But it isn't important (at least, it wasn't on my test) to know, say, which menu should you go to if you want to find a pull-down list of html tags in a specific product, etc.

Vidon is right on target about the actual test questions.
My teacher gave us a short 30 question practice test, and after the test he mentioned the fact that there wasn't many program SPECIFIC questions; and he stated that the reason was that there would not be many like that on the test.
