Do I really need the official foundation course materials or can I just get by with books available in the stores?

I've heard good things about the CIW Certification Bibles. Never used them though.

as of March 2002, the commercial materials available for Foundations are highly misleading (and one - the examcram book - has so many errors it isn't even worth listing them). If you are an experienced IT pro with some other certs already, you may be able to make do with materials available on the net. Otherwise, I'd go with the official materials - for the Foundations exam specifically.

For the other exams, I might give a different answer... ;-)

You should be able to get by, with the every book EXCEPT the ExamCram one, which covers networking in grat detail.

I assume that Hacker is referring to the book,

CIW Foundations Exam Cram (Exam: 1D0-410)
by Carol L. Miller (ISBN: 1588801659) published by the Coriolis Group.

But most of the reviewers at Amazon.com give negative comments. I think anyone who is thinking of buying need to read those reviews at Amazon first----something to think about!!

Coriolis has provided a 3-page cram-notes for Foundations at the following URL:

http://www.certifyexpress.com/proso...n-cramnotes.pdf

Even though it is just about 2.75 pages long, there are already a couple of mistakes!!

I personally feel that this book should not be recommended for Foundations. My impression after reading the reviews is : "Anyone who still wants to buy MUST study CAREFULLY and be able to identify the mistakes or be misled by the book!!"
