Several references say that a circuit-level gateway firewall works at the Session layer of the OSI Model, while others say the Network layer. Since this type of firewall does Network Address Translation, which is based on IP addressing, wouldn't it work at the Network layer, or am I thinking about this wrong?

Can anyone help? Thanks

Want to get even more confused? I just now checked my Prosoft Foundations books and it says that the circuit level gateways work at the transport layer (7-35 of the Networking Fundamentals book). That actually makes sense to me since the transport layer is below the connection (session layer) yet above where the datagrams are put onto the wire (network layer).

"Circuit -Level Gateway" firewall applies security measures when a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) or an UDP (User Datagram Protocol) connection is established. Once an approved connection has been made, data packets can flow back and forth without any further monitoring by the firewall.

Since it works with TCP and UDP, I'll say it works at Transport Layer.

ProSoft says Transport. Transport it is!
