| Hi - I am thinking about taking the CIW foundation course from home in order to (hopefully)start a new career but before I waste my hard-earned cash I would appreciate any advice about doing this course - e.g.are potential employers likely to be impressed if I pass the foundation course etc. or will the fact that I don't already work in IT count against me ?
Also can anyone from the UK recommend any companies that provide the CIW foundation course ? So far I have received details from itdistancelearning.co.uk.
Thanks for your help ! | |

| At least you can say you are Certified Internet Webmaster. Even if people don't know what it is it sounds great! And for yourself? It's a good start of a new career.
Good Luck! | |

| barney I am in the same boat too. I decided to roll the dice as I am not getting any younger.I asked the same question of my teacher, having the same concerns, according to him all the paper you have will help you but agian you must know how to apply this knowledge as it will not take long for a future employer to figure out you dont have a clue as to what is going on. I think the IT field will become stronger as the economy increases. My word to you if you have the time, resources and will, anything is possible. goodluck!! | |

| Hey guys,
If your planning for the ciw track (any track) it good to start with the ciw foundations because that what you need to continue.
I quit my job as a service engineer to study fulltime for 10 months for the master enterprise developer track and at this moment I'm in the java part and employers are calling me to come work for them!
So don't be afraid it's a good choice but you need to put your teeth in this and you really want to succeed!!

| I just recieved all of the course work I need for the foundations thru master Design cert from Smart Certify. It is the official CIW self study suite. They also supply you with all the support that you may need. I highly reccomend these guys. They are an international organization. They have toll free numbers all over the world including the UK.
The guy I dealt with is Called Richard Martin. You can call him toll free at 00800 72307231 or e-mail him at rmartin@smartcertify.com
He is a brit so he`s one of us.
Good luck

| barneyb, I'm the same as you in that I've been in the Insurance industry for the last 15 years. About 5 years ago I started using PC's and found the internet. It grabbed my interest immediately.
As the years have gone on and having gone through redundancy & searching for a new job, I decided that I needed to do something now to get out of the rut I was in. I signed up for the CIW Site Designer courses and completed all 3 a month ago. I did my Foundations exam 2 weeks ago and passed and will be doing my Site Designer exam this week.
I intend to do CIW instruction for a while & then do some site design either for a company or self-employed.
I did my courses at IT First Ltd based in Sutton, Surrey. It cost me nearly £3,000 although I think they've reduced the package cost considerably since then
Having done the courses, I feel it will certainly help in my move into the IT industry.
Best of luck | |

| I say get them from wherever they're cheaper. I know who smartcertify are, doesn't john smiley do online courses for them?
I'm just asking , but is it legal to photocopy the courseware? Not to actually sell it, but to share it? I'm guessing that there are copyright/I.P issues in re to that.
As a CIWCI I am forbidden to photocopy courseware so I guess it would be the same for everyone.
I'm sure we're allowed to share our notes even if they are very similar to the courseware. I just think that AU$800 per module is absolutely ridiculous. If we all really trusted each other we could pay portions for each module, like between 30 people or something. Thats like $10 each..... | |

| I am certain that there are copyright issues here. I guess if a few people all got together and formed there own little group, they could get away with it. I mean who is going to tell????
I agree that the cost is insane, but I guess if you want to do it you have to pay it. |
