I've just been doing a few practice exams at Cert21.com and a question came up asking 'Which of the following are plug-ins?'

  1. Acrobat Reader
  2. Powerpoint Viewer
  3. Shockwave
  4. Apple Quicktime
  5. Realplayer

I chose all except for Powerpoint Viewer. The answer said this was correct but also Acrobat Reader wasn't a plug-in.

I thought a plug-in was a program installed which would enhance the browser to allow viewing of various multimedia and documents. The answer explanation also said that a plug-in is a program which is automatically run by the browser in order to view a doc, animation, sound etc. without having to download the file and view it in another application. Surely then Acrobat Reader is a plug-in - allowing the browser to open a PDF file within itself.

Please clarify this if you can.

Many thanks

You are correct. Acrobat Reader is a plug-in.

Acrobat reader is also a stand alone application you can run outside of a browser.

That may be what they are thinking?

Acrobat is a software that can be a standalone, but Acrobat Reader is definitely a plug in.

Test: Check out Netscape|About and you will see it clearly!

Powerpoint viewer is the only program that does not qualify since it is not integrated with the browser.

Acrobat adds itself to the file types in windows. So anytime any program tries to access the .PDF file Acrobat will load as the viewer. Basically, it appends itself to the MIME list.

And, Yes it is Plug-in, but I think the person who wrote the question thought of it as a stand alone word application.
