On the ciwexam practice exam I saw this question and the answer there is ISDN.

30. Which of the following is NOT a form of direct connection?

I would say LAN but I'm probably wrong.

The others are types of Internet connections but a LAN is a network type.

Really strange question, but it has to be LAN. DSL, ISDN and Cable ALL connect to an ISP (e.g. if DSL uses an ATM, connection is to the ISP's LAN ), while a LAN may or may not be a direct connection to the Internet.

For the second question, LAN is the answer. A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers network in the same location whereas Internet is an example of wide area network (WAN).

Thanks Guys for clarifying this point. I too came across the 2 similar questions with different answers .

I'm doing my Foundations exam tomorrow and trying to cram as much as possible. Any areas to particularly concentrate on?

Cheers

Hi,

New the these forums.

My answer was ISDN becuase it is a dial on demand connection. You have to dial the ISDN modem to get a connection, where as LAN, CABLE and (older)DSL are always connected.

For those of you who have taken the exams, are the actaul question this vague.

Thanks

I found another question with more than one answer:
When was ARPA founded?
I read about 1967, 1968 and 1969 !?!?

ISDN is actually a terminal adapter and has to be dialed to get a connection. You can have it on all the time, but fee's are like cell phone's. You have a base number of minutes then they charge you per min extra you are on.

The standard connection rate is 64K (1 channel) you can activate both channels and get the full 128k (2 channel). The phone company typically charges single channel rates, so if you use both channels you are using your time 2x as fast.

When using both channels it is called "Multilink-PPP" ISDN is being replaced by DSL in places that DSL or Cable are offered.

You can verify this by going to your local telephone companies website and checking they're ISDN option's, they will explain how it is billed and which type's of service are offered.

After dialing with ISDN, you do have a direct connection, like cable and DSL, the question is not how to pay it. A LAN connection goes by the router and therefor called indirect.
