Author interested in new online courses?

I have been trting to think of a way to combine my degree in Psych (I know a little of now people learn), my tech knowledge, and my writing ability (I've made a little money as a tech writer) in a way to have an additional source of income. If I were to develop some Web-based CIW specific courses, would anyone be interested? What would you be willing to spend?

Thanks for any help as I try to decide whether it's worth making the effort . . .

More general than "how people learn with technology" is "how people think their way through technology"

So what's hot in psych/new technologies is web usability - the biggest guru on the web is Jakob Nielsen - see his online column at:

http://www.useit.com/alertbox/

The competing schools of thought are:

bigger, better, faster more (design/multimedia people)

vs.

keep it simple stupid
(usability advocates like Nielsen)

This field is still pretty academic (although covered in CIW to some extent).

Personally I'm very interested in this field by way of e-commerce and would love to see some training developed.

Does anyone know a good reference for colors? Not the safe palette but the psychology of your color choice for a site. You know like green makes them buy or whatever...

I am updating my site and I want to use colors that are conducive to learning...

Heather - I'm a member of the keep it simple school, the only exceptions being purely entertainment sites. I recently redid an Intranet that looked like a high school kid went nuts with a color etch-a-sketch - plus, about half the links were broken. Now its a nice clean, well-organized, informative site.
Also, the focus of any courses would be on real world site development, that's where I'm coming from also.

San - I need to get back to you, I have a book in mind but I don't have access to it at this moment.

By the way, thanks to you both for your frequent and informative posts to this forum (at least from what I've seen since becoming a member.)

I have a chart around here that could help you out sweetheart. It is a chart of evokation of emotion by color and by tone. I will see if I can find it for you. But off the top of my head, White Blues(especially those with grey undertones) Grey, black, and light spashes of fun colors like yellow, and oranges.
Ask our psyche friend he might know.

Also Developing web based training material is a lucrative field, but I think your going to have to be more niche oriented. You'll be competing with some big boys with big technology all ready out there. Hell I can recreate an entire CIW Track using my Element K account. But worth looking into.

You know... I have been toying with this idea for a while... The site I am redoing is mostly for my classroom students now. But -- why not do on-line courses. I can make more than standing on my feet all day and people are getting less interested in taking courses. They want to save $$$. Even you, Super Casey -- have to be noticing the trend.

The theme however needs to be instructor led forum. That is the selling point over a lot of the tutorials out there... Colleges are doing it left and right!

P.S. Man I leave for one gorgeous weekend and everyone goes quiet in this forum!!! Casey -- I am still hungry (you promised me dinner)

Instructor Lead WBT;s are the best forum to deliver classes in. The problem is the ability to communicate well with multiple users. I have used Learn Link before which has a PPT Viewer, Streaming Win Media, and a realtime chat room. You definately need to have an aid in class who has the aptitude of the instructor to field all the questions that come in on the chat feed. Everyone else communicates real time using VoIP. Which Kicks XXX. Recording an Instructor lead class is also useful, especially as a repeat study aid for current students. I set up a Win Media Server in class today and recorded the students doing stuff and released it...which was definately fun!! ANyways, Yeah baby so when are we going to hook up and knock out some of these great ideas??

Dinner Time!!

The book I was thinking of is a huge work by Thomas Powell on Web design. I covers many usability issues, including colors.

It would be very useful to those who have not passed Site Designer and Ecommerce Designer yet.

It can be found here:

Good luck and best wishes for a great weekend.
