| I am a Novell CIP certified in Internet Business and also Web Design. (have any of you guys heard of the, by the way?) I think it's really cool....I am going to be dual certified. I am automaticly passed the foundations and site designer tests....and I get a free voucher for any test I want (the e-commerce). I am low on cash right now and I wanted your guys advice on the best way to study.....I have alot of knowledge and a good deal of ecperiance in web designing....but I looked at practice tests and I dont think I can get the 75% without some study. By the way.....What is the score needed for instructor status? I have a question....how come the certified poeple are always the WORST designers. I mean my instructor when I took my $3000 course didnt know half as much as I did and even if he did, he didnt have half the talent.....how do poeple like him slip through the cracks.....it just makes me mad to see poeple who know so little and cant make a fuctional, good looking site if the had too. And they make 60-up an hour consistantly.....Thanks guys! | |

| haha....
Sorry, I didnt mean to insult....but...sadly alot of it is true! I mean check out this site...by an instructor...WOW I mean websitesthatsuck should do hers. http://www.cobbwebdesign.com/
I mean, did she learn anything? Well I guess you cant learn creativity.....anyways....I guess it doesnt matter if you are getting paid! It just makes me jelous.
But seriously, my instructor was bad....he like slipped through the cracks...he was not even supposed to get in....if I would have took my tests 3 months earlier then when I took them (back in 99) I would now be a CIP instructor...with no extra tests.
haha...but anyways...you seem very smart I have read alot of your posts....
Well I auto-passed the foudations and site designer cus novell and CIW are merging....so all I have left to take is the e-com. And I get a free voucher for that test. Kool huh?
Thanks! I am sure ill have more questions laters on! <ben>

I haven't heard of CIP, but then again, I only found out about CIW through a friend several months back.
I have been working for an internet company for more than 2 years and was only familiar with networking certs, such as MCSE.
Unfortunately, many IT recruiters I talk to and webdesigners, too, are not familiar with web design certs.

| Yea.....I agree.....I dont like coding and stuff....although my parents love to say that I am technical....I like to think I have a good balance of both.....
Doing your own site is fun though! There is no pressure....anyways....I have a couple of questions....but first....no I dont have a site anymore....I used too.....I could put a screen shot up.....the reason why I dont is cus for a while I quit computer stuff to do music....and I still am into music (me and my brother are starting a band, I guess thats where my creativity comes from ) but I needed money......so now I am back into web design again.....i used to be such a nerd.....but I got into web design back in 97....got my cert in CIP in 99 (I was 16!) and um getting ready to start a flash project xadent.com...I am going to start my own design company....anways...here are my questions....
1. Should I purchase the 400 dollars selfstudy kit for the E-com? Or just read all I can about it and then take my free test. (My printer is stacked 2 inches high of stuff I printed out to study all day today, I think I am also going to purchase that book)
2. How, and how much should I charge....I was thinking like charging different rates per hour....like for flash 25 an hour...and graphics design 30....and html at 15 or whatever......so what are your recommendations.
3. Got any ideas for a kewl band name?
4. How to promote myself?
Thanks a ton! <ben> | |

yes, i've heard of CIP, i was actually thinking of taking it (about 1yr back), instead i waited for other type of Internet cert that is more recognized by the industry. as of today, i think not even CIW gets the recognition from employers! (pliz correct me if i'm wrong)

BootData -- I don't think you are wrong. programming certifications will just never be as excepted as Networking (MCSE) certifications. It is just harder to prove by a test that someone can program. I teach a LOT of Visual Basic classes and many people understand the language and the syntax but they just don't 'get' it. Coding is an instinct and intuition...

1. I tend to say the book will suffice but it depends on where your knowledge lies. I will paraphrase what the wise old man would say (casey) -- If you have the programs that are included with the course you can get away with just the book. However, remember the course was created to help people pass the test... So it should have the answers -- you decide for yourself. Worst thing that can happen, you fail the free test and have to pay for it.
2. Check out the going rate in your area. I wouldn't pay you a penny though unless you could show me a demo site. So you better start cracking on your own (which if you are a perfectionist is hard -- you need to sell yourself to others. Like you said if your site isn't good why would I want you teaching others or doing mine.)
3. Nope.
4. A Web Site | |

| I leave the room and you people Go Off!!!
Savages
I have a few things to add.
About instructors: Ususlly we are so busy answering everybody elses questions, and buildiing their solutions that we dont have time for our own. So please Give us a break, and honestly if you think about it, none of us is good enough to rank on anyone else.......Except for Sasi because she is a Goddess ( and please don't call me an old man, I am in the prime of my youth.)
CIP Great Cert track, I am a huge fan of Novell course ware, unfortunately not well recognized.
About CIW Not being well recognized. It takes time, when you say businesses dont recognoze a cert, most often it's the HR or Hiring staff that doesnt recognize it, simply because they are ignorant. I will tell you as a consultant, the certs have been worth their weight in gold. And remember it takes time for a Tech CErt to degenerate into a household name. Remember we were Certifying MCSE in NT3.51 before most of you knew what a 'puter was.
Rus Band Name. My last band name was Blind Side. Remember to use something that reflects the band, not some cheesy gimmick crap name.
I am sure there were other things, unfortunately I have to leave now. I have to get ready to hop a Jet to the other side of the country to take SasiSan out for dinner, and some dancing.
Cheers.
Casey
PS That teachers site does suck. I have talked to her about it before....back in 1999 when I said " Man look at that mug shot" Savages. |
