adding to Zack's posting:
' ... able to find a job with these CIW certifications??

if you'r skilled (elementary to intermediate) in webdesign (design + programming), but no real 'IT' experience, if you have CIW certs, will it help?

the reason i'm asking this is i'm thinking of changing career focus to internet/web-related stuffs.

thanks.

Boot Data,

I dont know? I have the MCIWD. When I go on job interviews every employer asks me "what is this MCIWD" . I know html javascript and asp very well, but it doesn't seem to really matter when you are competing against computer science degrees. I have presently started my Master's in MIS. I think certifications are good for people who have good experience in the web field. I think it is bogus how places like New Horizons try to get people with no experience to pay $5,000 or $6,000 for a worthless CIW track.New Horizons really takes advantage of people. My advice is go to school with that money (a college) it is much more credible in the eyes of employers.

Yes is my answer. I teach this stuff, and I put in a little more effort than most instructors because my students like yourselves are career transitioners. 80% of the students I get with little to no IT get good jobs. Simple fact, of course they also work very hard while in class, studying, testing, assessing, producing. You only get out of this what you put into it. And as far as the certs are concerned, the certs are the difference between a management or upper production/design role, and an entry level role. On another note, as a CIW Istructor, I make 30% more than when I taught MS. I hope this helps If you have serious questions feel free to email me.

30% more... Damn!

If they don't know what the CIW is then don't pump it. What you need is a site to demo! I tell my students, from the first day of HTML to start creating a site. Ask the local library, video store, coffee shop or Vets Hall. If you don't want to do that create it for some fictious company.

Then -- offer to show them the site. Explain that through studying for the INDUSTRY STANDARD certification exams you have expanded your knowledge with tools that will help a potential employer!

No certification gets you a job! But if it gets you the interview then you go for the job!

Good Luck!

I would like to append Sasi's Post about a portfolio site.

Industry Standard...2 URL's Live.

Go home, Drink, and whip out 2 websites.
Now go get a job.
Tell them Sasi and Casey sent you.

hi Zack,

bottom line: we need to learn lots of things on our own...(provided that we have lots of free time)

goodluck with your master's course, for now!

I can remember when I was just starting. I used to have to climb through the snow uphill both ways to get to the computer room.

Seriously -- it is the same for all of us. I turned off my cable TV. Used the extra money to buy books and stuff and all that wonderful time to study. I would get about 4-5 hours of sleep at night and had no social life... BUT -- I like where I am now! so it was worth it!!!

I couldnt agree more. Sasi is right all of us have to make some kind of sacrifice in order to make it in this industry. For years people couldnt understand why I was crabby all the time, and looked like I was ridden hard.....which was because I got used to 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. Instead of having cable, or buying that new cool thing, you buy books, and software, or you engage in a life of crime to score the money you need from a 7-11. The payoff is after you buckle down for a year or 2 you will become a god or a goddess. Well worth the investment.
