Hi folks,

I am looking for the best way to study and pass the site designer cert (Passed iNet+ and currently studying for ecommerce).

I can get the books from prosoft for $300 (includes shipping and handling).

Has anyone had experience studying and passing Site Designer doing self study with these books?

or

Is it better to shell out $2000+ for a course? (been designing sites with HTML and FP 2000 for 1 year).

Please reply ASAP before I go ahead and spend the big bucks

Thank you

Herman

If you have been using HTML and FP2000 then you probably don't need the course and can save the money for another topic that you are less familiar with. Of course that depends on a couple of things:

1) Your style of learning. Are you the type of individual that can pick up a book and understand the information or do you need instructor led exercises and verbal information? Many people need to have the introductory topic presented to them by someone who can answer their additional questions rather than having to research all their questions.

2) Your level of knowledge. I get nervous when someone tells me they just know FP and HTML. The reason is they think that using FP to create the HTML teaches them how to code in HTML and that is far from the truth. I would look at the objectives for the exam and see how much you are comfortable with.

The Prosoft books are your best bet for study material. The test is based on that material and nothing else really compare right now.

I guess my last comment is what does that course include? If it includes a graphics program and you are unfamiliar with any then again it might be worth it. You need to make the decision about what is best for you!

Good Luck and stay in touch!

Thanks for the great advice (unexpected)

I had thought about the CIW2GO.com self study course but have leaned towards just getting the books. Do you know which is better? (Just getting the books was recommended by my iNet+, ecommerce instructor).

BTW, the reason I thought about self study is because the above 2 courses were not worth the money paid, due to bad organization of the institute (non ATP) and the instructor not knowing his stuff.

So I am not to enthused about doing that again.

Regards

Herman

CBT or Books: Depends on the material. Dry stuff like ECommerce -- in my opinion isn't worth the extra money. But something completely new to you (perhaps Perl), might be better learnt from an interactive CBT...

Again -- it depends on you. After working all day in front of the computer I am more likely to curl up with a Java book at night then I am reading off the screen for two hours... (I know, I need something better to fall asleep with! :rolleyes

Hope this answers your question...

I have had the privilage of looking over the CIW to GO course material (a little german man from prosoft sent me lots of stuff through UPS)

The CIW to GO has both the CBT's and the course books. THe CBT's are all right. There are a few chapters of lecture, a few tutorials, and performance based exercises, and a practice exam. I liked it. My kids had the books allready so I burned the CD for them to try out, and they loved it. CIW to GO is probably a good bet for you. Especially if you dont have the apps taught in the classes, or little experience with the Apps..

Snoogins.

Thanks for the info - maybe you can burn a CD for me also (I'll pay). My email is surfin120@aol.com.

Just received the 3 books in the mail from prosoft.

Best Wishes

Herman

PS I sent you an email a while back!

Hi Kiwi(are you from NZ?)

Take the tests after each course because you forget info you have studied for the previous course.

Easier to digest

Easier on the pocket(at least it appears so)

Have time to thoroughly know your stuff before doing the exam.

My 2 cents!

Best Wishes

Herman

I agree with Vision... -- but let me offer another flavor that has always helped me. As you are taking the second class, start hard core studying for the first test. i.e. During Site Designer -- be studying and prepping to take Foundations. The reason I like this is because it covers the next level which answers the why to something you might have otherwise just memorized and accepted.

I do this with MCSE also. If I am going to take Professional then I have already read the Server stuff... Hasn't failed me yet!

Good Luck and welcome to the forum...

Hi Herman...

Thanks for your reply.....
You know from the very begining I felt taking the exam after each course is better...but the instructor told us that after the 3 courses is better as each course helps in the exam of the other (as you'll have the whole view in your mind)
but I still think your opinion is better though !

Well...I'm From EGYPT...

bye))))

Kiwi: How long are the courses?

For a newcomer waiting on Site Designer might be a good idea. I don't think that any of the other courses will really build on Foundations -- that test you can take but the Site Designer does get feed from many other courses -- especially if they are not ProSoft courses...

I teach many non-ProSoft courses and it takes a couple classes to cover the same material. Contentwise you are usually the same but the Prosoft courses are written for their tests. If these are not Prosoft -- I think you should trust the instructor (except for the Foundations...)

I like it Certify!!!

Good questions and they seem more current than many. I just wish they would change the grading...

I will bookmark this one for the future!

I have achieved the Master Designer cert. I pretty much agree with everyone else here has said; if you have some experience, don't pay thousands for the courses; I didn't. If you are interested in what specific books I used and recommend, please cut&paste this link:

http://suckit.cc/CIW_resources.htm

Good luck.

PS As an added tip, when I took the exams, there were very few questions on software. I assume because they are for Designers, not Developers, so know the rules and concepts.

This page links to really nice books..I think they are great sources to learn most stuff about designing and the certif. as a hole....

So I suppose you took each exam after its own course right?

I guess it is the best way after all..

thanks again...

bye.....

Just checked at the Prosoft website, CIW E-Commerce Designer Official Self-Study Series: US$300+?
they are trying to rip me off?

I haven't taken any CIW exams yet, but there are some nice outlines listed on the Brainbuzz.com job site. I found it useful so far.

I work in webserver support so some of the CIW information I know, but alot of details I do not.
