| I will sit for site designer test tomorrow morning. Wish me luck.
Pass or fail, feedback will be provided. The site gave me confidence to face the exam.

| Good Luck!!! Make sure you know about those Aurul Stylesheets!!!

| Thanks, Sasisan.
I have read all your post about CIW. It helped a lot.

| I hope you don't see the 4:1 thing... I still don't know if that means 400% or 25%... | |
| jaywang 2001-04-17, 6:10 pm |
| Passed the exam with 95.
Sasian, you wrote the exam or not? I got one questions on Aural style sheet and one on graphic program (it is 1:2 in stead of 4:1). I still don’t know I chose the correct answer or not. My choice is half of the actual size.
I will take some time to sort out what left in my mind after the exam. Write to you guys soon.

| Hi guys, please find the attached html file listing all the resources I used for Site Designer course apart from the Prosoft training course material. I tried the cert21 paid practice questions. It did not help much as it did for my MCP test; however it is worth the money. Hope you will do well on it.
This is my approach to a certificate exam. Before making any investment (time or money) on an exam, I will go to the discussion forums in Examnotes (www.examnotes.net) and Cramsession (http://cramsession.brainbuzz.com). Read through all the threads within at least the last 4 months. It is really a good starting point. Lots of wonderful people offer help and share experience. After that I will do a research on which study guide or method to choose. Once the study material is set, devote yourself to it. Read and read, practice if possible. Always have an attitude to learn instead of cramming. After reading, use any resources (search engines, forums) to dig out as many as practice questions as you can. Use the questions to identify your weak points. Reread….continue the loop….you will be fine.
The attached resources list is gathered through this web site and other search engines. Special thanks to Sasian and Karen4793.
| SasiSan 2001-04-17, 7:55 pm |
| CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I passed it... Not with as high a score as you did though. This one isn't my strength. Give me ASP and Databases...
That is the same question I got 1:2 -- I was just trying not to repeat it verbatim. I still don't know the answer either. No one replied to my earlier post about it...
I still say the question pool changed recently which is why the cert21 isn't helping as much.
So what's next for you? | |

| Thanx for the resource jaywang. I'm about to start studying for this exam so very grateful. | |

| Sasian. E-commerece and Javascript are my next targets. Still have not decided which one comes first.
Heard that Prosoft is gonna update E-commerce courseware in August. Maybe I should try it first? any advice?
| SasiSan 2001-04-19, 11:29 am |
| I would do the E-Commerce first. I just looked to see if there was any word about the course update but my instructor status with them is still new and I haven't figured out all the ins and outs. I did make a phone call though, let you know.
The reason I say E-Commerce is that the rest are all programming, except the OOP. You are in the fact memorization mode from the first two... So why not finish it up. Besides it gives you one of the 'premier' certifications...
I have been following the posts on this one closely. I am going to try to take it next week. I had to dedicate this week and last week to MCSD and MCDBA but then I am back to focusing on this (before updating all the stupid MCSE courses). Sometimes I hate chasing these exams, but if I want to work...

| Congrats on passing the test! You did a great job!!!!!! You sir are the man.
I want to give you some advice about classes to take. Contrary to what Sass thinks and she is a goddess I have to suggest taking JavaScript next for a couple of reasons.
1. EComm has nothing to do with the skills you have learned up until this point. You will learn Ecomm theory, Server Admin, and Ecomm platform construction and App programming.
2. To gain the most form Ecomm's performance skills you should have either a Srv admin background, or a programming background.
3. JAvaScript, gives you a skill set that directly complements your Site Des skill Set, and teaches you valuable perf skills such as Baking Cookies, Form Validation, and Intro Cross Browser DHTML Techniques.
4. You will find employment easier with a proven front end skill set, as opposed to a little fron, and a little back.
5. JavaScript will help you understand the programatic portions of the Ecomm class better leaving you time to focus on Srv admin, and theory.
I have been teaching this stuff since the programs inception, so I feel I have honed at least the MCIWDes track to a fine science.
Here is a sample teack I put my students through so you can see what I mean about creating complementary skill sets.
HTML
Foundations
DreamWeaver
FireWorks
SiteDesigner
Front Page/MS Intranet
Flash
Macromedia Integration
JavaScript
Perl
UltraDev
Ecomm.
I always try to put Ecomm last because it is the culmination of all the other skills. However that sir is up to you. Good luck, Casey
| SasiSan 2001-04-19, 2:37 pm |
| You are my hero...
What about for those that aren't interested in a lot of front end design? Do you still recommend Flash and Dreamweaver? You know me I like the back...
I see the UltraDev. Do you recommend ASP before ECommerce???
| cboyles 2001-04-19, 2:52 pm |
| The sample track I laid out is the CIW Master Designer with supplements. Since most students take this track in hopes of working on the front, or running ProjMan then I suggest leaving those in. If back end if the Gig, then the Path would change. I always suggest Fireworks, you can use that thing to builg a whole web if you want to, in fact I frequently teach UltraDev,and Fireworks to Developers. If they arent interested then loose the Flash.
As for ASP before Ecomm, I dont think the students need a whole asp class, however I do a 1 hour ASP overview seminar where I demonstrate Response, Request ContentLinking Basic ADO, and I couple that with a 30 min SQL Seminar (all in class) to help the students understand why they are changing the code that Site Server Creates. I have found that in my control group that addition was welcome and useful, and in class, it has saved me an average of 2 hours of debugging!! Mind you if you look at the 2 hours savings vs the 1 1/2 hour investment the return isnt that high, to supplement, I assign the Case Studies chapter, and Usability chapters as Homework which saves me about an hour in class. This works very well.
As a suggestion to you, as a performance series, 2 day VBScript, 3Day ASP, Ecomm, SQL 7.0 or 2000. 3 weeks intro to middle tier development. Sweet!! I am trying the first part next month, I will couple in SQL later.
: > )

| Cboyles & SasiSan,
Thanks for all your input.
Similar with SasiSan, I am more interested in backend staff. I finished a two-day flash course last Friday and just found out that I did not have a brain for frontend graphic design.
Here is my situtation. Currently I am on a sholarship contract with Educom (an IT trainig company). As a paid full-time employee,I will be trained in the CIW enterprise developer track and Macromedia Dreamweaver products, plus realworld work experience. Pretty nice for a career changer, eh?
I have years of experience in marketing and general management. Finished 5 of 6 MCSE NT 4 exam and have a fair bit knowledge of SQL server 7 adm and design and basic Java programming. Hope to swith to a descent IT business solution consulting role. The basic idea for me in the coming year is to grasp related knwoledge as much as possible given the nature of my contract. There are quite a few nice instructors here. Instructors are always nice and cute, aren't they?
After some research, I think I will go Javascript first and then E-commerce. Following is my desired track, any input?
CIW Javascript
CIW E-commerce
CIW Per Fundamentals
Dreamweaver Advanced
MCSE 2000 upgrade (70-240)
MS SQL Adm
MS SQL Design
CIW App Devp
CIW Java Programming
CIW OOP
CIW Database Sep
CIW Enterprise Dev
I know it is gonna be tough for me; but lots of fun.(I have finished Javascript, App Devp and SQL training courses)
By the way, between Dreamweaver UltraDev and Ms Visual InterDev, which one do you prefer? Which one is more popular in the dustry? Our company use only NT platform; so Visual is our choice. How about the outside world?
cheers. Maybe after all my fights, i will become an instructor like you guys. Who knows?
| cboyles 2001-04-20, 6:15 pm |
| Your headed in the right direction there. One thing I would like you to condsider is the statement you made about working on an MS platform. I think the MCIW Ent Dev would be benificial, however if you are designing for MS I suggest you pick up VBScript, ASP, ADO. Depending on how robust your solutions are you should also pick up VB (for future .NET integration) and XML based technologies, especially if you are working with SQL 2K Servers. THe MCIW ENT DEV certs are good, however there is a serious dependancy on Java for all those classes, I would hate to see you invest in a bunch of certs that teach you technologies you wont use at your work place.
Seriously Find out what kind of technologies you will be using, then learn those first. It helps!!
Betweek InterDev, and UltraDev, I prefer Ultra Dev for Live designs, because the product gives me the flexability to design solutions for all platforms. If I am working on an MS Intranet I will use InterDev and UltraDev. HomeSite is always a bonus to have on hand for architecture construction!
Take Care I hope this helps.

| hi Jaywang,
i actually had an offer for 'scholarship contract'from an IT training company here in Singapore for MCSE training.
but, decided not to take it, instead i joined systems-integrator company as a software engineer/application consultant.
this is my first job in IT world.
my job as software engineer is not fantastic right now; the client project hasn't really started yet - paperworks almost everyday...doing functional specs, gathering specs from user, etc.
i guess you are having fun with your training company ...if i had my way, i would love to turn the clock back and accept the offer for the MCSE training scholarship-contract.
but, for a starter in IT, i should be grateful enough :0
hope i get more knowledge/wisdom from you guys...btw, this forum is great ....
'just sharing my experience....

I like to think that we are all nice and cute -- the problem is that all the students get too intimidated to ask the teacher out!!! lol (what a bummer!)

Alright -- the Fundamentals one surprised me. I would move that closer to your MCSE upgrade, since you are going to need the OSI model and networking. Move Dreamweaver forward or back to prepare. Also I would move the SQL Design closer to the CIW Database. The App Dev is ASP and stuff so that can fit in earlier or later. If you don't know Java I would push that after the Database stuff since it is the Sun exam. Better yet. Take those first three and then reassess this. Might prove easier.

Visual InterDev is very unstable. I always have problems with the program. I would say UltraDev is better -- but who knows what the future holds, what will .net do to turn the tables...

Are you cute enough to be an instructor? If that is a way you want to go then I would look into it now. Microsoft gives you discounts on exams, CIW doesn't though!!!
When is the next exam??? You have been going strong so far!!! Keep on keepin on...

Tell me if you think it is enough to help with that test question. I kept beating at poor Casey until he did the research for us

| I am back. Glad that my post helped and appreciate all the input.
Busy with one external client intranet project these days. Worked at back end, of course. CIW training did help in the project. I just could not imagine how I would cope with it without the training. Of course, I wouldn't get involved in the project if I wasn’t trained in CIW track.
I will do CIW Javascript on May 14. Keep your figures crossed for me.
BootData, no worries. Your fun time will come. Getting user requirements is dull; yet you won't do well without it on any project.
Keep in touch. |
