Author A Question on my Practice test...Help =]

2001-01-10, 5:46 pm

This is a question that was on one of my "practice" exams for the I-Net+. I am sure in any Certification this is VERY important to know I have a problem with their answer Can anyone help me here?

Question:
Your boss called you because he can send email but cannot receive it. Which protocol is most likely to be the cause of the problem?
POTS
SMTP
SSL
POP3

The answer I gave is POP3. POP3 is used for RECIEVING E-MAIL and SMPT is used to send? It was found Incorrect and said that the correct answer is SMPT.

Am I having a mental blackout from studying too much? Or is my way of thinking correct and the test administrator is having a mental blackout?
HELP! =]

I wanted to add that this is their explanation:

Their Explanation
A protocol is a set of rules that tell computers how to communicate and exchange data.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used to send email, so it is most likely to be the cause of the problem.

POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is used to receive mail. Since your boss can send email, this is not likely to be the cause.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is used by Web browsers to establish secure connections. It is not a mail protocol.

POTS is an acronym for Plain Old Telephone Service. It is not a protocol.

EEEEEEEEEEEK!Need I say more?!!?!?

I think it depends on what exactly the question is sayimg, if it is as you wrote it, then adminstrator is right, because it says that your manager is sending the e-mail but it can't be recieved so something wrong with the sending, but if the manager can send e-mail and the destination can read it, but he can't get e-mail sent to him so your answer is the right one.
Any way, I took the exam in mid of Nov. and it what much easier than the questions online, so take it easy

See Now I just knew it was a trick question! Thanks!
But I am thinking if he called (my Boss) and said that he cn SEND E-Mail and NOT RECIEVE IT....it is implying he is having the problem not a remote location?? What do you think....although I can see how you have come up with that.hmmmmm.

our network had an identical problem. Anyone who sent us email from outside our exchange server who mail returned as undeliverable. It was an SMTP problem, very specifically the MX records were screwy.
