| All I used was the manuals supplied with the course. That was sufficient for me. I found that all the questions were straight from the book.
Good luck. | |
|
| What's the scoop on the CIW cert anyway?
Is it for beginers or vets or...??
I'd like to get into a web certification and this is the only one I've heard of (so far) Is it comparable to CompTIA/Microsoft/Novell certs and are there any books available out there?
Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

| Well, I have just finished a few courses and finished the Site Designer track. I am hoping that the certification is going to help me - I will find out soon when I look for work. I did lots of research and it seems to be the only thing out there. I heard that it has been out for a bit, but is starting to take off and be recognized.
Regards to it being comparable, well, that's a hard one. The courses are not that easy and the exams are pretty tough. I have take most of the exams for the MCSE and I found a few of them easier than the CIW ones. So, that may say something too.
I think you can buy books from ProSoft, but I have not found any CIW books in bookstores. It's all pretty new still.
I have my A+, i-Net+, CIW and 2 exams short of my MCSE. I am hoping that will all of that I can get a job in the web design, developer type jobs.
Hope that helps you. | |
|
| Thanks Che,
I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a job in the web development field!!
That's kind of what I'm leaning to as well...I can sit there and create pages all day long (I've just got to find a way to get paid for it )
If you were going to create a new web page, what would you use..ie. Front Page, Page Mill, etc.
Until recently I was doing all my work in notepad, but I tried using Front Page and was impressed! I was just wondering what the most popular/powerful web tool is?

| eet77,
it really depends on your preference really,
all web authoring applications have their +s and -s; i my self prefer Dreamweaver 3 (macromedia) and Frontpage 98/2000.
i dont particularly find the adobe products for web authoring to be my first choice

Well, I currently use FrontPage 2000 - I really like it. I have tried HomeSite and NetObjects Fusion, but haven't made a real decision on those. It seems lots of people use NetObjects. I haven't tried Dreamweave, but I hear that's another popular one. It all depends on you, what type of designer you are.
Notepad is find, but it takes way too long. These web editors work with you and add shortcuts. You should try a few out.

| Weblord/Che,
Thanks for the info!
I think I'll try out Dreamweaver but right now I'm leaning toward FrontPage 2000 (Microsoft rules the world right.. )
Geocities allows you to publish direct using Front Page....
Thanks again.

PS. Writting i-Net+ this week..i think?

| Yiminy.. I must be the only person here that uses notepad or pico (when I'm using linux). I prefer a text based environment and type it all out. It's the programmer in me that makes me do it that way, I guess. Doh!

| I used to use a text editor (In my quest to be a "purist" geek), but my boss at work insisted I pick and use a package in order to save time. Now I'm lazy and can't remember a lot of the tags without a reference sheet. I've got a lot of studying to do if I am going to tackle these tests! | |
|
| I'd get a software package but software is so expensive. Someone would have to get it for me. I don't have $200 lying around. | |
|
| Hi guys,
Just a note on design packages...
I've been doing this for 4 years now, and still love it! Started out with notepad and stuff, then found hotdog pro... thought it was really cool cause it helped me get stuff done quicker!
THEN i saw Frontpage, and thought it was wonderful!,
THEN..... I met the ONLY program i use, and ever will use, called Dreamweaver, now they have a new version called UltraDev..and it absolutely ROCKS! i still do the notepad thing when i'm in a hurry to change something and dont want to load my program to do it, but man i'm tellin you what, this program is worth every penny ever spent!
Hey just another note, if you dont want to spend the 600 bucks (yeah it's pricey but worth it!) then checkout evrsofts free program called "firstpage2000" or something likethat. get it at http://207.153.240.9/files/?/htmle/1stpage2000.exe hey it's free! pretty cool, does all kinds of stuff.
Anyway, just a note for ya'll
I'm taking site designer and ecommerce in the next two weeks, anyone got any tips or advice for me?
|
| I too like FrontPage, but I am trying to learn Dreamweaver on my own - not too bad so far.
Sounds like you have been doing design for a while and know your stuff. If that is the case, the Site Designer exam will be a breeze for you. Just know some of the picky stuff like the organizations and be familiar with NetObject Fusion and FrontPage.
The E-Comm was a lot harder for me. All the security and encryption was a killer. I actually thot I failed, then I saw that wonderful green line at the end. All I can say about this is to really understand the process of how e-comm works (with security and encryption). Also, know Net.Commerce. It is so stupid that ProSoft chooses this software package to test. Most people can't get their hands on it since it costs $12,000 CAD. They shouldn't test any particular software package.
Good luck. | |

NOPE! I started writing web pages a hundred years ago -- Everyone coded in pico and surfed in Lynx. I've tried to learn a couple of editors, but I spend too much time trying to figure out what button will produce what code!
BTW, my hubby likes pico so much that he just downloaded a version for Windows, so now I don't even use notepad anymore!

| Congrats, Ricker! Did you take the course or study on your own? I've been writing web pages for about 5 years, so the CIW site designer is a natural next step for me ... Would appreciate any tips!

| Well, I only studied for about 30 minutes actually LOL. I'm a technical instructor. Some of this stuff just came naturally to me, considering I've dealt with it in one way or another from being an MCSE and all that jazz. I don't know much, but I apparenly knew enough to pass this one pretty easily.
You should have no problem on the site design test... especially since you're basically in the same boat I was in when I wanted to take it...(having done this for years) Some of the stuff is pretty helpful on this page: http://www.examnotes.com/ciw/sitedesigner.shtml so know this page well and you'll do fine, seriously. Most of it is all just common sense type stuff. STUPID questions on some things, but be very careful with words, cause they will try to trip you up with wording, just like M$ tests!
Good luck dude!
Anyone got hints and advice on e-Commerce? taking it tomorrow....YIKES! lots to know on this one
