I personally have used only MS Press Kits for all my exams.

Just use MSPress. Happy studying!

I used MS Press for 228 and I thought it sucked. I used Que for 229 and it was much better. I would advise against the MS Press books unless you already have extensive experience with SQL Server. If you want to learn while getting certified, Que or Sybex would be better.

cpp.. I too have used Que, albiet not for MCDBA, as I'm just getting started. I would recommend them as well.

I teach the MCDBA courses for an IT-Cer school, and we use the MS Press kits to teach it. There are tons more avilable though. The MS Press kits might get you ready for the exam, but if you wanna get under the hood of SQL 2000 (7.0 too) get the Administrative companion, or better yet the Resource kit. Even these two resources are wordy and expensive, so are multiple test attempts. The SQL Books Online (BOL), is awesome, and it comes with the SQL Server application. The ResKit and Admin companions also come with Demo-Versions of the software. Technet is good for many of the specific SQL issues. Find a good book on coding Stored procedures, for the 70-229 exam. It seems like alot to process, but when I tackle a certification objective I go all out, and want to take the test only once...

For the 70-228 use:

- Sybex McSe SQL Server 2000 Administration: Study Guide (My Favorite)
- The Self paced Microsoft book 70-228
- And the SQL Server Administrator companion

For the 70-229
- Sybex MCSE: SQL Server 2000 Design Study Guide
- The Self paced Microsoft book 70-229
-Inside SQL Server 2000

And the key to pass is a practice test:

I have Sybex and MSPress, and am starting to get bogged down with Backup/Restore, mainly because I am not really getting to grips with the theory behind the transaction log and VLF's , checkpoints and so on.

Does anyone know of any decent "plain english" explanations for these topics?

TIA

Do not worry so much about VLFs.

Try to focus on backing up the transactions logs in the real world.

In the real world you need to shrink the database and transactions files (if you do not have space).
And backup the logs.

I recommend you to practice some real scenarios:

Verify the DBCC Shrinkdatabase and DBCC Shrinkfile. Verify the limits. How much does it grow. Fill the transaction logs with some queries.
You will understand the main facts of VLFs while practicing.

If you want to read a little more read the BOOKs Online in the Administer SQL Server>Backup and restore operations. The section is huge. But it will help you a lot.
