which exam and which material

| Hi,
Can you give me any advice?
1. I want to take one of the two exams (70-228 or 70-229) as an elective for MCSE, but which one?
I have some experience with SQL databases (Informix, Ingres). Most people take 70-228 first and then 70-229. Why, is 70-228 easier or more basic? In both cases I would have to start from the beginning. At first glance 70-229 looks a much more interesting for me.
2. Which books to buy for 70-228?
I have the following candidates:
MCSE Training Kit: Microsoft(r) SQL Server(tm) 2000 System Administration
(ISBN: 0735612471), by Carl Rabeler, this book is linked from official MS website about MCSE certifications
MCSA/MCSE/MCDBA Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 System Administration, 70-228, Second Edition
(ISBN: 0735619611), by Microsoft Corporation, they say in Amazon something that it is a hard-to-find title
Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000, by Kalen Delaney
MCDBA Administering SQL Server 2000 Study Guide (Exam 70-228)
by Inc Syngress Media
I will probably buy only one of them.
3. Which book to buy for 70-229? (especially if somebody knows something about the Marc Isreal book, the Thomas Moore book, and what's the difference between the two MS training kits)
MCSE Training Kit : Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation (Exam 70-229) ISBN: 0735619603 by Microsoft Corporation
MCAD/MCSE/MCDBA Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation, Exam 70-229, Second Edition
by Microsoft Corporation
MCSE: SQL Server 2000 Design Study Guide (Exam 70-229) -- Marc Isreal
MCAD/MCSD/MCSE Training Guide (70-229): SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation by Thomas Moore
MCDBA SQL Server 2000 Database Design Study Guide (Exam 70-229) -- Syngress Media Inc

If you plan to be an administrator with minimial programming responsiblities the 70-228 is better. If you have a development background (and your are familar with SQL) the 70-229 should be better. You stated that 229 looked more interesting so I think you have already made your choice.
2. Which books to buy for 70-228?
Your first tittle looks like the closest to the Microsoft official training course (the MOC) That's what I used but I had to do a lot of additional study. QOTD's, the forums, transcender if you can affor it, etc.
I don't own it yet but I see the Inside SQL Server 2000 mentioned most frequently as a recomended book. It is worth owning for the test or after.

Can't give you a lot of help here. I'm using the MOC plus online materials. Hope someone else knows the titles you are looking at. You might look at www.halfpricebooks.com If they have your books they are half the price at amazon.
Good luck. | |

| What can you say about the "MCSE SQL Server 2000 administration for Dummies"? On amazon you could check (a little) this one says that if you dont have any idea about SQL Server this book is for you, but, if somebody have read this book, how could you compare it with the Microsoft Press books? Is this one better?
Thanks for your answer. | |

| I have not seen that particular book so I can only guess. I am pretty sure it will not have enough detail to allow you to prepare for the test. It would be a useful starting point but you will need some additonal sources, like the Microsoft Press selections. | |

| I can't make heads or tails of the new requirements so I'll let someone else answer that one. Looks like MS removed the listing of requirements for MCSE Windows 2000 and I can't find my print out right now. Good luck on the exam. |
