From MCSE Exam 70-229 "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation" Training Kit, page #463 last paragraph of 'Netwrok Protocol Security', it says:

"There are other ................ Stop Named Pipes server announcements so that the server does not appear in graphical interfaces such as the SQL Server drop-down list box in Query Analyzer. Disable Mailslots broadcast so that the Server's NetBIOS named does not appear on the
network".

Where I can find information about "stop" Named Pipes server and "disable"
Mailslots broadcast ???

Coco,
I couldn't find anything on how to disable either of these. I was able to find definitions of mailslots and how they are used. Here was a pretty good example:

http://www.global-shared.com/api/mailslot.html

The only way I can think of to disable named pipes broadcasts and take care of NetBios is to go into the server network utility, disable named pipes, enable TCP/IP, go to properties, and check "hide server". I don't know if this will disable the mailslot/NetBios broadcasts, but it seemed like the only SQL way that could do it. I didn't see any way to stop named pipes other than to not use it. Sorry man, (damn MS Press) looks like the authors wanted to add some fluff without teaching us anything. Heh

Thanks necrophantasm.

I agree that "authors wanted to add some fluff without teaching us anything".

Good luck for 70-229.

I am working now and will take exam sometimes
in September.
