Author Exam Cram for 70-228

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, and I started looking through it this morning. A cursory glance at the 3rd chapter turned up two apparent errors: they refer to something called the "modal" database (a Books Online search on the term returns nothing), and in the chapter quiz, nchar and nvarchar are stated to be non-Unicode types (while char is stated to be Unicode).

Has anyone used this book? Is the whole book like this? Am I better off to cut my losses and get another (more-accurate) study aid?

Your input is appreciated.

Thanks, RD

I used the exam cram for 70-224 and was very unimpressed. I'm using the Syngress Hardcover to study for 70-228, it's 800 pages and, after taking the Transcender, I've decided that it's the way to go but every page counts. I would doubt that the exam cram will adequately prepare you. IMO. Sorry to be the wet blanket!

Thanks for the tip - I will look into that book!

Hi Divxguy,

Poor experience with the exam cram book there! I've found errors in exam cram books before, and Coriolis do have an errata section on their website (http://support.coriolis.com/errata/), which is always worth checking but I was disappointed to see that there is nothing as yet for this particular book.

Others using the book when it has been out longer may find that the errors have been documented but I wish they would have a better proof-reading process.

I have stopped using ExamCram books - far too many errors.
I used the Syngress book for 70-228 but found that it, too, contains quite a few errors. Still, on the whole I found it useful and would buy it again. The replication chapter was especially useful. The questions are OK for review purposes, but simpler than the exam. The book appears to be a re-worked SQL7 book, with some info that is now out of date. Here is an example from page 39: 'any column that allows NULL chars must be considered as having variable length'. This is no longer true: in SQL2000 a nullable char column will always take up the full width.
The 'examsim on the CD' in previous Syngress books was just an electronic version of the printed questions, so I did not even bother to look at the CD this time.

The CD in the 70-228 Syngress book is WAY better than the old ones. I popped it in the other day to review all the chapter questions (which were also better than most Syngress books) in a different format. I got a surprise! The cert trainer is actually useful as a review and the little narrated movies of doing tasks in SQL Server were a pretty good memory jogger.

The fact that the narrator sounds exactly like Apu from the Simpsons added a little unexpected humor I'm guessing the narrator is the author, and not a paid voiceover artist.

I thought that one was particularly awful. You have to remember, the book is meant as a review, not the only source of your information. I thought the ones for Server, and 216 were awful as well. I used a "Dummies" book for 228, as well as the Microsoft Press sleeper. A Plus Exam Cram was alright to me, though ???

I think there is some overlap between 70-029 and 70-228, so if I revisit the old Transcender exams for 70-029 and thoroughly learn the 70-228 versions, using Books Online to fill any gaps, I think I'll have enough knowledge to pass the tests, without having to buy an additional study guide.

I wouldn't get the practice for your next test from the old one. You can bet yuor left @#$, that the test questions were changed. It is not like MS just switched all of the entries for SQL 7 with SQL 2000. The systems are similar, ridiculously so, the big add-on in 2K being the inclusion of Active Directory. Check out the transcender demo, at their web site. i have heard from a reputable source that 229 is easier than 228...Study hard...

I have the 70-228 Transcender package, but there's lots of extra learning material on the old 70-029 product as well. I'm sure the T-SQL commands haven't changed much between the releases.

Well, the verdict on Exam Cram 70-028 is in, and it actually proved to be quite useful (including some last-minute cramming with it before the exam started). I'll have to put up a positive review for this one at Amazon.

On to 70-217!
