| I took 70-229 last week and missed by a question. There were 44 Q and 110 minutes. Questions were pretty tough (I blame it on myself for failing though) I got 32 correct and 33 was the water level. It stinks to fail by a question.
There were three biggies on XML. I wasn't prepared for questions that complex wrt XML. Also there were two questions where you have to place buttons to simulate the steps for using SQL Profiler for some index tuning. Boy! They all look similar and they will not even ask you pick some number. I was asked to pick all that applied.
There goes 5 questions where I think I might have screwed up. Then there were 2 questions where the Execution plan was given and you had to pick the right plan/Query.
There were 2 ambigous questions wrt Index Defrag and ReIndex and other about SQL Profiler.
On the whole I was pretty drained out. I have taken two other MS exams and I whisked them in a flash and scored pretty high scores. Transcender is still not out with their Cert and Flash for SQL 2000.
BOTTOMLINE: Prepare very very well before you attempt to take this exam. Hands on experience is a MUST for this exam. Good luck to all takers.

Thanks a lot for your replies.
I took the exam 2 days ago and got a miserable score (550).
Crikey it was tough ! In my defense it was the first MS exam I have taken and I obviously did not prepare enough. I didn't get one question on XML, but lots and lots on logical database design, where the question often asked you for the 'best answer(s)'. Some of the exhibits took 5 mins too understand, with 2 table designs, db diagram, an update script etc...
I think that for some of the questions you have to give the answer they are looking for, which maybe not be the most 'solid', e.g. what is the fastest way to...
I will not try this one again, until I have studied all the material I can find !.
If anyone has any more good sources of potential questions they will very appreciated. I studied a lot, from the SQL 7.0 resources available on the web, and I was fairly confident going into the exam.
I am also thinking of waiting until the Transcender comes out for this exam.
How do people rate the usefulness of Transcenders, compared to more traditional study resources (books etc). A mixture is best, but those Transcenders aren't cheap !
Cheers,

| I take two approaches towards preparing for a exam. If the goal is solely to get certified, read more of transcenders and crams and less of traditional "Unleashed", "Blue Books" kind of books. If you really want to learn and understand the subject, there is no shortcut friend. The second approach will be time consuming and takes lot of effort.
Good Luck. | |

| I was not impressed with coverage of Database Design from the MS books, especially since I was approaching it from the standpoint of already understanding design and data modeling. The Oracle App Dev book from Oracle Press has some really good info on this topic. Good design is not application specific -- there are some general database design books out there that may help you in this area. | |

| I took 70-029 this morning and passed with a score of 918. Test was faily simple. Completed the test with more than a hour to spare. I had failed in 229 last week and I chickened out. I had transcenders for 029 and felt confident about 029 than taking my chances again at 229.
I have completed 175,176 and now 029. 1 more to go for my MCSD. I am taking a week off before i start for 100.
Read the dumps, but dont buy their answers. Many of them are wrong. Transcenders helped me big time. Good luck to all.

| Survivor2001, I am working on 029 right now and I also have the transcender. Is it a good guide on what mix of questions to expect?
Congrats on passing it!

| Hi Thinker,
I made a mistake of not using transcender extensively when i gave my 70-229(which i flunked). I crammed it the next couple of days. Prepare well before you start taking the tests in Transcender. After you are done with all three, Make sure that you review each and every answer. Pay very close attention to it. After you are done with this take the exam again. You should improve your scores by atleast 200 points.
Also take a look at SqlPeters dump in braindumps.net There are some 160 questions. Some of the answers are wrong. Just get a feel of the Real questions. That should help too.
If you have some basic knowledge of SQL and Logical Design and if you do the two things i mentioned above 900 + is in the bag.
Good Luck. | |

| Thanks Survivor2001,
We are kind of in the same situation, you still need 100 and I still need 029. I will give you the same advice in studing for 100. Once you start taking the Transcender test pay close attention to the exact wording on each question. It is really easy to give too much information that wasn't asked for and it counts as wrong. |
