| I am begining with the Certification process. I don't know up to now where to begin. I want to do a MCSE and a MSDBA. I am thinking about the 028 and 029, they are as I understand, elective for MCSE and core for MSDBA. I would have time to decide meanwhile.
I was preparing for the NT4 but they discontinue the exams and I don't know if I am thinking about the right path now.
Think in advance for your help.

| First of all... What do you do??? Are you trying to break into the industry or just obtain certs for what you do now...
SQL Server exams are not easier than the MCSE exams -- it depends on what you do. I will say that if you are breaking into the industry you might want to start with the SQL Server 2000 exams: 70-228 and 70-229.
Good Luck! | |

| I have been in the industry for more than 13 years now. I have a BS in computer science. Instead of going to a MS, I am thinking about having some certs which may be, I think, more interesting for the market.
I studied for the 70-067 and 70-073 but they retired these exams. I have NT4 servers and some NT Workstations installed and I have also the last backoffice. I may install and work with the SQL server 7. If I go now for the 2000 versions, I won't find them anywhere.
What do you think. | |

| Actually SQL 2000 is showing it's face in the market. It is VERY close to SQL 7, in that you would have no problem with backward compatibility but you WOULD be more current and need to retest further down the road.
Definately need to get W2K Server into the mix. There are four test required for DBA:
1 -- Server
2 -- SQL Admin
3 -- SQL Design
4 -- Elective: if you don't plan on getting the MCSE or MCSD then I would take the Data Warehousing course as the elective. That makes you a hard core database specialist. Second choice for me would be VB (I don't know C++).
I still am not sure what your current function is but if it isn't admin -- you might want to start with the Design exam and the elective. Then you can backpedal to the Server and the Admin...
Hope this helps?!?!?!?!

| Thanks,
Now, I am doing a little of everything. Some programming in Visual Basic 6 and Access 97. Some NT4 Networking.
I am planning to get more specialize. I am planning the MCDBA then the MCSE.
The 028 and the 029 are core in the MCDBA and elective in the MCSE. I will have time to plan what next.
Is that sound correct? | |

| Yep they are both electives for the MCSE, so you will only need the core five, the two SQL and you get both certs...
Any thoughts on where you are going to start? 210 (Professional)? or SQL?
Good Luck! | |

| I am begining with the 029 then the 028. | |

| Good Pick... with 029 you will get the MCP and everything else is in the same groove.
Remember that 29 is about database management. So there are TSQL statements but concerning database management. Some queries are there but more to ask why it would run slow -- and the topic is indexing and table structure.
I am sure you have looked through the other posts on it though!
|
| Thank you very much.
I began yesterday night with the 029 and it's very interesting.
Yes I know that it's about database management. I already know some SQL query knowledge and I notice that the 028 is about that.
Yes I look already through the others post about the easiest one and I pick this one. I will try to go on.
Thank you again. | |

| I have my MCSD (I took VB and SQL Server design). I am a VB/ASP/SQL Server developer. I don't want to go for the MCSE since it is a totally different area from development and there are already way too many MCSEs out there.
However, I am interested in getting my MCDBA. Do you think it will strengthen my skill level? Do the MCSD and MCDBA complement each other? In my opinion, the MCDBA will help me become a better SQL Server developer.
Any advise?

| ok so if I have this right, I get my MCSE my other core is 70-215 and my electives are 70-228 and 70-229 I'd be an MCSE and an MCDBA? I was thinking of doing 70-220 should I just leave this one for now, maybe read up on it after? I'm just starting out, I just got my A+ and was thinking on MCSE next, but am not sure which exams I want to be taking. any advice? | |

| I'm curious about this advice as well. I just took my iNet+ (for the CIW Site Designer)and I can't decide what to do next either. MCDBA, Java, Oracle...there is so many to choose. I'd like to stay well balanced in the website stuff, as in knowing about the servers, databases as well as the design. |
