Author IIS or Admin SQl Server

2000-08-24, 7:43 pm

Im planning on making TCP/Ip one of my electives but do you think I should go for this or IIS?

I develop databases in access (and I do know my SQL) but going for MCSE to broaden my horizons.

IM looking for a quick fix and have some exposure to both. Any idea what would be easiest?

I know that most people take IIS as the other elective, but I am also tempted to do the SQL one as it is not up for retirement yet.

Any feedback would be great.

Personally I would go for SQL.

IIS 4 is now so close to being killed, and to be honest I think SQL is more value. Esp since u are using it already

I am committed now, got paid yesterday and went out and bought exam cram for TCP/IP and Sybex for SQl server. Thus as I have the book I aint going to be doing anything else.

I agree with you anyway, I think that the fact that it is not being retired yet (though who knows when it will be announced with the arrival of SQL Server 2000 coming soon) and I believe it will be of more benefit in the long term to learn as much about SQL Server as I possibly can

Cheers

Hold on:

IIS is important for 2 reasons. One) It gives you one part of a MCP+I certification. ..and Two) I've heard that it prepares you better for windows 2000 if your planning to upgrade. Just some things to consider.

I thought they were doing away with MCP+I?

+ Since I am working with dbs every day I think that it will make sense to go down the other road

Dont even think, just take em all.
=)
That's what I did. But I didn't want to go for MCSD since I'm not much of a programmer...

Im back at uni in just over two weeks, so I have got that time (and maybe the first week of uni) to bust my *** off and pass Enterprise (I write on tues)' TCP/IP and ADmin SQL Server (+ as I am working full time developing a db just now I might be asking a lot).

After that it is get stuck in at uni for 3 months and finish my MSc. After that it is back on the certification track.

Right enough, I am doing a networking module at uni, and since I have already passed net essentials I may kill two birds with one stone and do N+ at exam time. The road to becoming a certification junkie is well underway!

certification junky!!! great term I think it may apply to you. Well better soak it all up now before madcow desease or als or altzimers or someting else makes it more difficult.

To anyone else following this thread: If you take IIS and have say NT Server4 and TCP/IP then your an MCP+I This is worth $5,000 more in anual salary. per http://www.mcpmag.com/members/00aug/images/Chart3cx.GIF

even if the cert is disappearing in a year or so.

I wouldn’t quite say that I am a certification junkie quite yet.

I got a degree in physics a few years ago but never got a job in the field. I started a masters in IT which is a kind of 1 year conversion course for graduates who did not do IT as their first course ( I’m sure you have seen the likes).

At present I am 2 electives away from being an MCSE. I am only doing these just now because I have the resources where I am working just now and I want to learn as much as possible about any area in IT to make myself more employable when I finish my masters in Jan.

Once I get my real degree, I will probably be more picky about which certs I go for – probably down the lines of MCSD as I am doing development just now.

By the way feel free to slag off any CERTIFICATION JUNKIES that you come across, especially those who like to have their signature with 50 letters after it.

I wonder if it is the IT equivalent of the guy who buys the large car because he has such a small *%$*

I hear you on the big-car factor!!!
