Author Passed with a 833!

Yes!

This one is not as hard as I thought it would be. Only one subnet question, in fact it was my first question. I had written out the guidelines for the subnet chart from the Troy Tech study guide and was going to use the calculator in the first question to complete the chart and boom! there was the subnet question. The chart came in handy though for the "What wrong with this ipconfig/all dump", I had two of those. Other things to know are LMHOST files, HOST files, DNS Server types, DHCP utility and how to use it. I had two scenario questions on Making DHCP work. Also had two scenario questions on TCP/IP routing and what do you need to make it work. The two TCP/IP scenario routing questions were the same only with different proposed solutions. I had another two questions that were almost identical. It dealt with pinging the domain name and IP address. One asked it one way the other the next. When I saw it on the test, at first I thought it was the same question. So read them carefully. Know your TCP/IP utilities, NetStat, NBstat, Performance Monitor, Network Monitor, ipconfig/all, FTP, PPTP, NSLOOKUP, route, and tracert. Know Unix printing, LPQ, LPR, Printing Service on Server. Had two Select and Place (Drag and Drop). One was the order in which to ping the network to trouble shoot it by IP address. The other was where do you put DHCP relay agent and WINS proxy on the subnets. Know DNS, WINS, and SNMP. Also, I had a question on using Peer Web Server for Unix computers to connect to Workstation and not using NetBios. I had 30 questions with 60 minutes to complete. Only took 30 minutes. Passing score is a 733.

So, what did I use. Microsoft TCP/IP self pace guide. Exam Cram, Transcender, Troy Tech study guide and Petri Testmaster. No braindumps this time.

The key is Trancender + Troy Tech = PASS!

This is the first time I used Dan Petri's exams. I found them to be very representive of the actually test. Also, Transcenders and Petri have very similar questions. If you are on a budget check out http://www.petri.co.il . He only asks for a $5 US contribution. With my experience with this test I'll say it is more than worth the $5 US. He has practice exams for many of the MCSE exams.

I am doing Proxy server next to finish up my MCSE. I been to that forum and it is a dead thread. Hopefully more of you will follow me there!

Hi FreddyFlyer,

Congrats on the nice pass. I am busy pulling my hair out over here preparing for the exam that I have planned to take by the end of this month, but from what I can see so far looking iffy!!!

I have all the same resouces that you do including the troy tec guide (edition 5), I hope that is the latest one...I have avoided using that because I really want to learn the stuff first...But some of those Transcender questions are driving me buggy!!!
I start reading them and my eyes start wandering into oblivion!!!

Anyway, thanks for the tips on the exam itself..Of course everyone gets a different one, but at least it seems like yours was not too off the wall like some of the stories I have been hearing...How long did you prepare for this one? Anyway, better get back to it here, got lots to get in my bruised ego's head!!! Enjoy your pass....Good luck with Proxy..

This is one of those exams where I used a lot of what I'd learned from the other exams. In fact, many instructors say take this one to prepare for Enterprise. After studying for it, I can see why they say that. Of course I didn't do it that way.

This is how I approached this exam and the other 8 I have taken in the last 5 months. First, I'll get a book, For Dummies, Exam Cram/Prep or a Microsoft Self Study. I review the book, look at the content, see how the subject is presented. Then I'll take some of the practice test to get a feel for the questions.(We used to call this test before training) I look at the Troy Tech study guide. Then it is back to the books for a more in depth look at the subject. By now I can see why some of the questions are the way they are. After I get a good feel for the subject I set a test date about one to two weeks out. I work better if I have a deadline. Then I read the book again and do the review questions with it. I practice on my home computer network using the exercises from the MS self study guides. This gives me a chance to see the tools and how they look live. I then move to the practice tests, start taking them over again and again. Reading the explanations for each question. Looking up the ones I don't get. As the test date get closer, I continue to practice the tests. I take the Troy Tech study guide with me to review while I am waiting for an appointment, or my kid's soccer practice, etc. Of course all the while I'm keeping current with the forums here at Examnotes.net, to read what people are seeing on their exams.

This process takes from two to four weeks. Depending on how much I already know of the material. For TCP/IP this process took about two weeks. This was probably more of an answer than you wanted, but thanks for asking.

Aim High!
