Simon,
Netbios names should be given with utility in mind. The name is a unique 16 byte address used to identify a resource on the network. The name itself is 15 leters long with a unique identifer (20h for server)attached to the end making 16 characters(bytes). the name should reflect its purpose on the net, or its use in case of a workstation.
Example:
ftpserver rather than PentimIIIPC
findataentry1 rather than mariePC.

the scheme comes into place when you choose a convention to identify the resource.
Example:
All the resources on the net that belong to finance will begin with Fin, or human resources will start with HR.

Hope this helps

good Luck
