printers in 98 disappear
|
|
|
| Sorry to post this in here, I tried the general forum and didnt get any real answers.
Does anyone know or have seen in Windows 98, maybe others as well, where for whatever reason, the PC will loose its printers. Yet, when you reboot, they are back again? I have had many cases where this has happened, all of a suddent they cant print. I tell them to reboot and its fine again. Anyone know of a patch for this or solution? I have looked but been able to find nothing on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

| I'm not sure about 98 but I've seen this being caused by the print spooler service stopping in w2k. When you reboot do they come back? | |
|
| Yes, when you reboot the client, then do come back. Everyone else in the office in the meantime CAN print just fine. So when it happens on the client, the only way I can get them to come back is to reboot the client pc. I have never had to reboot the server because of this. Im not sure what is causing this, but its giving me alot of grief at the moment. Any help will be appreciated. | |

| Next time it happens check to see if the spooler service is running on the 98 machine. If it's not running start it and see if the printers come back. You may need to replace the spoolss.dll. I'm not really sure though. | |

| Can you tell me how to check the spooler on a 98 pc? | |

| Oh man, that's a good question. Try under system in the control panel or run msconfig.
I'm not really sure I haven't seen 98 in couple of years.

| Actually I don't think 98 has services.. Try finding a patch from the printer manufacturer. | |

| This sounds more like a driver problem to me. You won't be able to find services in W9x, only NT based OS such as W2K, W2K3 and XP.
I'll bet it's a driver issue.

| Tried changing the driver from a HP LJ4000 6 PCL to a LJ4000 5e. Didnt see any difference. Still having problem. I wonder if it could be a memory problem???? Any ideas? | |

| Does the win98 PC have mapped drives to the server, and if so do these lose connectivity as well?
Win98 is very bad at reconnecting to devices on aother PC's if the connection is lost.
Check the Network lead and NIC of the PC, if it is only happening on this client.

| I know the solution... upgrade the OS.
Believe it or not, our bank still has users on WINDOWS 95!!!!
I haven't had problems with printers on our 95 and/or 98 machines. We're upgrading all of our old machines to W2K (always a few years behind the current technology).

| Found something very interesting on troubleshooting spool32 errors. Will find and post the link. It helped me solve the problem. Give me some time and Ill post it. | |

| Glad you got it sorted, and also thanks for posting a link to show how you got it sorted, should help others in the future | |
|
| Not a problem. It took me a long time to find this, for I have had this situation going on for a while. I hope this helps others, and I think it will. I had been relying on the "reboot" method, but now Im glad to KNOW that I wont have to deal with this crap anymore and wonder when its going to return. |
